So I’m fat. No getting around that. And for the for the past fucking month and a half I’ve been TRYING to lose weight. I exercise almost every day, I started eating 1500 calories a day which was half of what I was eating and no weight loss. I went up to 1700 figuring 1500 was too low and nothing. So I eventually went down to 1400 then 1300 and now I’m at 1200 and I’ve actually fucking gained weight at all calorie levels. I GAINED WEIGHT ON A 1200 CALORIE DIET. When I ate shit like donair, doritos, pizza (your basic crappy diet) I stayed the same, if not lost weight.
I had my thyroid checked, and it’s normal.
I’m hungry (I live off of salads and major portion controlled foods and nothing is more appetizing than the tablespoon of food you get in a lean cuisine) and cranky and tired all the time and to top it all off my pants won’t fit. And when I walk down the street I know at least half of the people who see me say “god, why doesn’t she stop stuffing her face and lose some weight already” FUCK I’M TRYING OK?
At this point I’m pretty close to ordering an XL donair with extra cheese and washing down some doritos with a 2L of pepsi. I’d probably lose weight then. FUCK SAKES.

Diets do not work. As a former fat person, I could never stick to it. Most diets are ripoffs, offering unrealistic solutions. I’m sorry but fruits and veggies never did fill me although they are part of my diet. The older I got, the harder it was to lose. So what I did was eat four or five small meals a day. I halved my portions and ate pretty much what I wanted. I also stopped eating after 8 p.m. Between that and walking on my breaks and lunch hour five times a week, I lost 40 pounds in a year.
Good luck, kiddo, it’s a hard road but it really is worth it in the end. I applaud your efforts.
Tell me about it, TTFN! I tried to “watch” my “weight” once and the amount of food I got to ate made me ravenous by the end of the day and more often than not I ended up half bingeing before i went to bed and felt like crap because I felt like such a loser.
I didn’t have a lot of weight to lose, so the amount of food I was able to eat when I was “watching” my “weight” was pretty low. It’s pretty much all vegetables, and I have a hard time digesting fibre from grains and vegetables (flax constipates me, even and I drink 2.5 litres of water at least a day) so I couldn’t just fill up on salads and other veggies. I can eat fruit and I love it, but it was pretty much restricted so I couldn’t just fill up on fruits either.
I have something wrong with my thyroid so I gain weight like a mofo, but i’ve found that eating protein in the morning and no carbs helps me stay full all day and I eat less, and I do what TTFN does: I eat smaller meals more frequently. I haven’t really lost any weight, but like I said, my thyroid has crapped out so the fact that I’m not gaining is a pretty good indicator.
Don’t starve yourself and if you never DO lose any weight, you’re going to be healthier just because you cut out all the crap in your diet!
If you’re exercising everyday and decreasing your calories, ayuh, you’re going to gain weight first.
First off, muscle weighs way more than fat. So fuck looking at the scale. The numbers don’t matter.
Second, if you’re exercising every damn day, you need enough calories to feed yourself. Decreasing them while being more active, and then decreasing them again is making your body go ‘HOLY SHIT STORE IT STORE IT WE GONNA DIE!’ You’re cranky because you’re starving.
Eat what you want, but don’t buy shit in boxes(dude, FUCK Lean Cuisine) or crappy food. Cook things by steaming, or roasting, with little to no fat. TTFN is dead on on the smaller meals too. Don’t wear yourself silly exercising, and change your routine so you don’t plateau.
And then try doing this for 6 months, not just A month. Then for the rest of your life, if you want to keep feeling good.
You CAN still have a donair and pop every so often, just keep yourself to infrequent indulgences.
Good post, Kitty. My hubby had problems with his thyroid and ended up at 320 lbs. – it only got better once he was prescribed meds.
You’re right about protein – it does fill you more – my fav is this double pack of sliced ham at Costco – only 30 cals a huge (although thin) slice, 3 of those suckers and some cheese on the side makes a great mini-meal. I’m a harden carb junkie however and that’s where my weigh comes from. So I try to cut down on processed foods and eat whole grains.
On a positive note, my mother is 94 years old, four foot eleven, 200 pounds and has outlived three doctors who told her she’d be dead by the time she turned 60. In fact, another one croaked last week. She thinks this is a scream.
Losing weight is a total bitch, especially because everyone needs to do it in a different way. Have you tried getting a nutritionist? They can decide what food works for you and what doesn’t.
Good luck!
Get a second opinion on your thyroid, OP. When I was diagnosed I spent years being told “Your thyroid is FINE” and after having EVERY one of the symptoms for years it was only diagnosed after the symptoms progressed and got pretty bad.
So, google “hypothyroidism” and if you find that you have the majority of these symptoms to any great degree get a second opinion on that thyroid!
LISTEN TO ME!!!!!!!!
This actually works.
A 1200 calorie diet consisting of doritos and pizza and other various junk food will not work the same as a ‘health’ food 1200 calorie diet.
I’m a girl, dropped 10 pounds in under 2 weeks by eating 700 calories a day. Call it unhealthy, but I really just wasnt hungry. Train yourself to abstain from food.
This was my diet everyday:
Coffee
Apple
Chicken salad sandwich
trust me, it works.
700 calories is downright dangerous. Your body is an engine – it needs fuel. It might work for you but for most of us, 1500 calories is hard enough – 700 calories is starvation.
Do you know what 700 calories a day means? That your body starts slowing your metabolism down and digesting organ tissues instead of fat since you’re STARVING.
I just joined Curves, and have lost 22 pounds since Dec. 1 by exercising & cutting down on what I eat. Not necessarly eating all “healthy” foods, but just cutting down on the AMOUNT of food I put on my plate, has helped tremendously!
micmac32: I don’t think the OP said they ate a 1200 cal diet consisting of doriotos and such, they mentioned they were eating lean cuisine and salads so I think they’re eating healthier. So I don’t think that’s their problem.
I’m just wondering if the OP should get tested for type 2 diabetes because if they were eating a huge amount of cals and eating crap and lost weight or stayed the same their blood sugars may have been out of whack and they were in ketosis which means their body was being starved and eating away at the excess fat…could also explain why they’re having problems losing weight now — their blood sugars could be better with the healthier foods and their body is actually being fed. It’s also hard for people with type two to lose weight sometimes, particularly women if it’s a by product of conditions like poly cystic ovarian syndrome.
I mean OP says they’re eating better, exercising and gaining weight (and if their pants don’t fit they’re definitely gaining fat inches not muscle)…
Before my thyroid condition was diagnosed I complained that I was gaining weight and doing all the right things and my doc told me to cut back to 1200 cals. I tried it and basically felt starved all the time. 1200 cals is simply not enough for anyone to feel comfortable.
Part of the problem is that this generation expects everyone to be the size of Keira Knightley, go to the gym 10 times a week and live forever. The reality is that some people are never going to be skinny — their body type just won’t let that be so. Some of those kind of people can make their body that way over the short-term but it isn’t sustainable for most. Real life gets in the way over time. People need to accept that some people will be tortoises and others will be jackrabbits.
Micmac32-
So what happens when you return to a normal calorie intake? I assume you’re not suggesting a person live on 700 calories a day for the rest of their life. If so, you’re in for a good round of anorexia and will likely kill yourself in the process. The other choice is to return to a higher calorie diet at some point, and the weight will come back.
It’s a stupid suggestion for so many reasons to think that a 700 calorie intake is a solution to weight loss. I think you’ve been listening to too many 100 pound celebrities diet tips.
To the OP, sometimes it takes a bit to figure out what your body needs to lose weight. We all metabolize differently, and it can take some trial and error. The suggestions about protein are good, especially if you can have a quality protein for breakfast, such as eggs or peanut butter. It’ll get your internal furnace going(metabolism), which is what starts calorie burning, and it’ll give you energy to start your day, you’ll be less likely to feel hungry quickly. Veggies won’t fill you up no matter how many you eat. You’ll just never be satisfied.
Hang in there. Remember in order for weight loss to succeed, you need to change for life, not just for the short term.
consistent exercise in my experience is the key. You don’t have to go exercise every day, I try to at least get 30 mins in every 2 or 3 days. There’s foods out there that raise you metabolism (stuff that’s high in fibre) to go with the exercise that you do; I’ve found it works for me. The amount that you lose isn’t huge at the start (maybe 10 lbs in the first 2 months) but it picks up and you don’t really have to change your lifestyle all that much to get around it. One tip: don’t avoid Carbs entirely. If you do, you’ll be nothing but cranky thru the day and craving something to replace it like foods high in fat, which would you rather have? Have some bread, or have a tonne of greasy bacon and raise your cholesterol thru the roof?
One of the best tips so far is about not eating past 8pm. I used to snack constantly between 9pm and midnight, and all that you eat during that time gets stored as fat. I noticed a big difference almost immediately once i stopped eating past 9pm. And if you’re starving yourself all day, you end up snacking at night. Eat your biggest meal in the morning, because you have all day to work it off and use the fuel.
Also you really should cut out anything entirely. Eat balanced small meals, some of every food group, or else you’re gonna feel like you’re missing something and just want to eat other things to make up for it.
Also, sometimes you have to change your exercise routine in order for your body to burn calories. If you walk everywhere normally, walking wont help you lose weight, you have to try something else.
Unfortunately Keith, in order to get a man around here to look at us in a romantic sort of way, we women feel we have to be the size of Keira Knightly.
So me a man who doesn’t feel this way, and I’m all over him!
Uh, Molly, I think that’s what the issue is… You “Feel” that you have to be that way. Truth is, most normal guys (Not the douchy gym dwelling superficial type) don’t like stick thin women. The reason why you “feel” that way is because the media makes you feel that way. If people paid less attention to the media and more to being who you wanted to be, I think you’d have better results.
Maybe all you guys who like normally shaped women should voice your opinion more to actual women you know, not just on internet forums. We might start believing you then.
Well, there’s a pretty big difference between “normal sized girls” and “fat girls”
Halifax is a very pretentious city and if your ass doesn’t fit in at least a size 10 good luck finding someone to fuck, let alone “relationship” with. I have a few plus sized friends (size 16-20) who run into this problem all the time, and any man would be LUCKY to have them because they’re fabulous.
It’s just a reality that in Halifax, fat people don’t get to “couple” that often.
I think Dr. Fever is right. We’re force fed this skinny image daily to make us feel bad, but when you really pay attention to what attracts guys, it’s not usually the super skinny chicks, it’s the girls with curves. I don’t mean obese, but shapely, not one long line from waist to ankle. We just hear the jerks who call anyone over a size one as being “fat” because those guys have the biggest mouths.
I disagree that fat people don’t get to “couple” often. Just pay attention to who is together next time you’re on the bus, or in a mall,or out to dinner, you’ll soon realize that larger people are coupled every bit as much as smaller. I think the only pretentious part of Halifax is the bar scene. Sure, only the beautiful people need apply in that situation, but that’s the same in any large city. Halifax is nowhere near as pretentious as Toronto, Vancouver or any big American city. As long as you’re looking for relationships in the real world and not in bars, have some confidence in yourself, then your bound to hook up eventually.
Fat people are gross.
Hey Molly it seems to be the same for guys too. I’m overweight and usually get to where to go just for saying “Hi”. Wasn’t always like that but it sure picked up after I went past 200 lbs.
People Are Stupid try paying attention in the future, normal guys just might surprise you.
To those who think everybody needs to lose weight in their own special way here’s a FACT for you to CONSUME. If it ain’t goin’ in, it ain’t gettin’ stored! Have you EVER abstained from food for a day? Like, fasting? Do you think you’ll die if you don’t stuff your pie-hole on a regular basis? Do you know what happens when you drastically reduce the amount of food and frequency of meals? Your stomach shrinks! Yeah, that’s what a hunger pain is, when the walls of your stomach touch each other, however rare. Live with it knowing you’re not gonna die of malnutrition. Live with it long enough (always staying hydrated) and you CAN’T eat like you used to. Realize how far a single bite will take you.
Losing or gaining weight is about self control. Get some!
I’ve tried them all, and honestly, the diet which encourages you to count points really works! It may be hard to follow at first when learning about points values, but it was worth it. I can’t believe it took me so long to find but it does work, and you don’t have to eat rabbit food
Kay sounds like the type who had her own pro-ana site.
Although if anyone ever met kay in real life they’d probably find out that she’s the fattest bitch around. There’s some serious fat-on-fat hate in this city and kay fits the profile.
Also, haligirlicious: that plan encourages people to live off of veggies. I’m sorry, but at its lowest point value you can probably eat a piece of toast for breakfast, a salad for lunch and an itsy bitsy piece of chicken for supper and snack on vegetables (even an apple has a relatively high point value if you’re talking about only being on the lowest point value). How appetizing.
Thing IS most people fail on diets because they’re hungry. No matter how much food they don’t consume, they’re still going to feel hungry if they’re not getting enough to eat. Not eating, as kay suggested, might work in the short run, but eventually the majority of people fall off the wagon. Especially if they’re hungry all the time.
Eat a few pieces of bacon for breakfast and an egg. Guarantee you won’t be as hungry for the rest of the day. Screw eating carbs for breakfast, they’ll just make you hungrier. I tried eating high fibre cereal for breakfast along with an apple and I was ready to binge out by lunch time. When I eat only protein for breakfast that urge to binge pretty much disappears.
thebeardedonion: YOU’RE gross. Piss off.
It’s all about healthy eating, excersise, and making positive life changes. It doesn’t happen overnight, I’ve been working on my health and fitness for 5+ years. Join the gym (hire a trainer if necessary), GO regularily, stick to a healthy eating plan, and work on being happy with who you are, no matter what you look like.
And most importantly: be patient.
Hey Pretty Kitty… go eat another twinkie before that very strange and alien hungry feeling catches you, God forbid.
To the OP,
Get a work-out partner. If you have somebody there to motivate you, and who you can motivate, the more likely you are to succeed.
Throw away the scale. Use the one at the gym once a month thats it. Don’t just go to the gym and workout, get active, swim, try and learn a new sport/activity and next thing you know you’ll be stronger and feeling good about yourself all around. nopt everybody will be a size 4. But everybody can be a size 8-10 which is not fat. After a workout go to a sauna it will get the blood flowing which will encourage healing and burn calories(make sure you are hydrated). And just learn more about the body and different types of execises. It’s the key know more about it(the body) the better off you are!
Try out this site they really helped me http://www.crossfit.com ( Note—The times and reps on the WOD are by extremly fit people so don’t look at them )
And keep at it hope the best for you!!!
About eating just don’t drink pop!!! I stopped and within 1 week I lost 5lbs. I did nothing else different but stopped drinkning pop. You don’t need to starve yourself to lose weight.
