  1. as a guy that’s been close to homeless himself (some crazy crackhead burnt down my apartment building in Cape Breton, thank god for good friends) there is simply no respect or sympathy for the homeless. Whatever got you there, no human being deserves to be treated like rats, and mall cops are often guilty of this, not all the time, but often.

  2. I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY WE’RE ALL YELLING!!!!! HOMELESS PEOPLE DON’T HAVE COMPUTERS TO PUBLISH A BITCH!!!!! IF YOU HAVE THE MENTAL CAPACITY TO TYPE OUT A COMPREHENSIVE STREAM OF WORDS, YOU’RE EDUCATED ENOUGH TO GO GET A JOB AND NOT BEG FOR MONEY ON A STREET CORNER!!! THEN YOU DON’T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT DUMBASS RENT-A-COPS INTRUDING ON YOUR SPACE!!!! IF THEY WERE THROWING YOU OUT BECAUSE YOU WERE LOITERING, YOU DESERVE TO BE THROWN OUT!!!! GET A JOB AND THEN YOU GET TO LIVE IN YOUR OWN PLACE, THEN YOU WON’T HAVE TO BE THROWN OUT OF PLACES!!!

  3. Its hard to get a job though, when you have nowhere to shower, no clothes to wear to an interview, no phone for people to call you to tell you you have an interview, no razors to shave, etc. Give the homeless access to all of those things, you’ll have… a lot less homeless. Yelling at them to get a job really doesn’t do anything for them, ‘cept maybe depress the already depressed. Go capitalism!

  4. My point is; there are outreach programs out there. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the homeless are there usually because they want to be. Society (a capitalist society, no less) attempts to help them, soup kitchens, halfway houses, and religious organizations like the Salvation Army help the homeless get up on their feet. Somehow, we still seem to have the same problem. The common thread is that the places that help the homeless require them to get clean, and stay off drugs and alcohol to maintain shelter. Oh, and before you go off on a tirade about how society has forgotten about these people, stop right there, because there are plenty of white-collar job type of people that give a shit and donate a pile of money and time to a number of worthwhile organizations that help the homeless. Think about that before you enable the homeless person who wants to be the victim of society.

  5. people have problems, people do stupid things, but they simply do not deserve to be left out on the street because they can’t deal with them. People do care about them, but until you understand their situation, you shouldn’t judge. Mental disabilities, addiction problems, lots of things effect these people. I believe in capitalism, don’t get me wrong, but it does leave some behind, and thats why government should do some little things to help them.

  6. Well despite having no sentence structure and everything in cap locks, the OP has a legitimate bitch, not something trivial like boyfriends or the weather.

  7. For those that are on the street that have mental illness/disability are there because family have basically given up on them, and the system has medicated and attempted to help at the limit of it’s resources and then have left them on their own, yes I do feel that the system (this happens quite often to schizophrenic people) has failed them. Addicts? No way sir. Addicts deserve all that they get, because if bad times are all that’s required to go out and ruin your life by trying heroin for a night, the we’d be all walking zombies. The homeless that are there because they’re addicted to a substance such as alcohol or crack or heroin are there of their own volition. They made an educated decision to try an addictive substance, and now they’re addicted. All that society requires of them to get back up on their feet is to get clean. Then it comes down to strength of will. That’s a personality trait and the government can’t fix that.

  8. agreed, but i think we will have to disagree on addicts. stupid to start, no doubt, but leaving them on the streets increases crime and does nothing to solve the problem, that some will continue to do hard drugs and end up homeless. there is a lot of reasons people start those types of drugs, we should help with what we can. we all do stupid stuff to a greater or lesser degree, but we all deserve empathy, not sympathy, but empathy. help is there, but it depends on a will to clean yourself up, which is hard to do with a physical dependence while your living on the street. good discussion by the way, nice to see someone that doesn’t scream “SOCIALIST!” at you cause you disagree

  9. Why scream socialist? Socialism is fair and equitable, and without it we’d be the United States; and we all don’t want that. I see your point, however, until we have a significant shift in our social thinking (one I don’t actually think I’ll see) empathy will not get us anywhere in the effort to eradicate homelessness, primarily due to the fact that we coddle those who feel that they were victimized by society (this is made worse by those who do not actually see that we’ve made advances in the effort to help the homeless and undermine said advances) and we need to realize that people are going to do what they want to do, and sometimes that leads to being on the street. I’m just saying we shouldn’t empower those who can’t pull themselves up. I’m all about helping those who need it, but it get to a point where it becomes where we’re supporting them; and that’s the welfare system (a system that I think that should be dismantled and rebuilt so that those who are able to work, work and don’t abuse the system, I’m talking to you, 18 year old mother of 4, which helps us help some of the aforementioned homeless that are there because the system has failed them) and that’s a whole different story. It’s a tough situation, and we just can’t put the onus on the government all the time because they fail at the important things like health care. Secondly it leaves no responsibility on the homeless themselves and yes they do bear some responsibility in all of this.

  10. Let’s get back the the bitch for a second. OP has no place to stay in the dead of winter, and therefore is looking for a warm place to sleep. Security Guard kicks homeless freezing OP out of an area he probably partols nightly only to find homless freezing OP (or others in the same situation). He turns into instant asshole. Reasons for this include: he gets shit on by his boss or the building owners for not being able to get rid of freezing homeless people on the property, he thinks he’s a cop, he assumes people will respect him if he’s an asshole, or he’s just an asshat.
There are 3 points here. 1) ALL people deserve respect (and OP, perhaps part of the problem is YOUR attitude towards an asshat doing his job?), 2) if we had more places for freezing homeless people to get shelter, maybe this wouldn’t happen, and 3) homeless doesn’t necessarily meaN jobless, uneducated burdens to society, it just means having no permanent residence and in need of a warm place during frigid Haligonian nights – so let the guy get warm for a few minutes instead of being an asshat.

  11. And, to veer away from the homless aspect, and back to the security part of the bitch… I feel really bad for security sometimes. They are generally young guys who need work, and security jobs pay more than minumum wage. They get little training, have some authority, but no respect. Look at what happened at the bus terminal in Dartmouth recently. It is a terrible job, the people who hire them expect them to act like cops but people don’t give them the respect of a cop. So they’re ridiculed by most, but if a situation arises, we expect them to do something about it.

  12. There are options for the homeless. That being, the metro turning point, amongst others. They have beds, showers, and can do laundry. So don’t say they can’t get jobs for any reasons like that.

This is to that person saying they can’t get jobs because of lack of showers. I am in no way poo pooing their situations.
