There is no wonder the whole post-secondary education system is in such a mess. Universities are mostly run by upper-middle-class conservative, unimaginative, boring white people who embody the complete opposite of the humanity that universities were founded upon. It’s a fucking joke. It is a publicly funded safe-haven for sexual assault, sexual violence, racism, classism, misogyny, labour exploitation, the suppression of true critical thinking and a retirement home for the well-past-their-prime. All of the unemployed or exploited young professors who can’t afford a pot to shit in should join together and create a new institution. Do anything other than give another minute of your short life to a concept founded on truth but sustained through lies. Everything you learn in a university can be learned somewhere else. —Stop The Cycle, Overpaid Admins And Retirement Age

  1. Your rant about an old boys run institution is rife with racism (white people) and ageism. Sexual violence on campus is happening all over Canada and the U.S. and is perpetrated chiefly by the young and kids of all colour. You exercise classism (reverse) by insinuating that because they are well off, they don’t care. Labour exploitation, well, you gave no examples.
I’ll give you a C minus. Next time fewer assumptions and more examples.

  2. I think, at the end of the day, I’m gonna choose to have my heart operation performed by someone trained at an actual school of medicine like Dalhousie’s instead of ohh I don’t know…Hollywood Upstairs Medical College or whatever the fuck it is you are suggesting.

“Universities are mostly run by upper-middle-class conservative, unimaginative, boring white people who embody the complete opposite of the humanity that universities were founded upon.”

Well, that’s a good introduction. Now, assuming you are a university graduate and have first-hand knowledge of what you are talking about, can you support each of those charges with coherent reasons, i.e., not just hot blow, for making those claims? And while you’re at it could you give greater specification to what we are to understand by that “humanity” upon which the universities were founded? Minimally, perhaps you can tell us the derivation of the title at top?

What’s that? You’re not a university graduate? Oh.

    A pleasure as always,

    Cheerio!

  4. Depends on what you study (key word being STUDY). Engineering? Medicine? Chemistry? Nursing? Law? Accounting? Most people probably expect a rigorous and recognized course program for those credentials.

Other things–Literature, Arts, Humanities, reward is proportionate to effort. Put serious scholarship into any of those things and you’ll find a worthwhile experience. Skim through like some kind of Jr. High School “hobby” course and obviously it will be a waste of time.

The university provides the facilities, the resources, the space, the time, the community. The student shows up and decides for him or herself what he or she will get out of it.

There are, of course, many brilliant and self-taught people all around. That’s great, but not everyone knows in advance how to structure a course of learning, and how to critique their own progress. Learning from someone who knows a subject through and through is a very different experience than reading the “Coles Notes” highlights.

  5. “There is no wonder the whole post-secondary education system is in such a mess.”
And your evidence of this mess is?

It is possible that the universities could be run more efficiently… and maybe they should be amalgamated and unified like our community college system… but I think I can personally name more than a few well educated, highly competent individuals who have come out of the current system.

On the other hand, I suspect the OB either chose a path of study that didn’t lead to a good career or didn’t finish their studies. Either way, it’s not the system’s fault.

“Depends on what you study (key word being STUDY).”

WHAT depends on what you study? Why do you say that “most people” expect a “rigorous and recognized course program” from areas like Engineering, Medicine and so on? Are you suggesting that “most people” do not expect areas like the humanities to be “rigorous and recognized?” Why not? Do you have any grounds to support such a claim? It sounds to me like you could benefit from a rigorous and recognized course in the humanities, specifically a rigorous and recognized course in coherent reasoning, i.e., philosophy.

“It is possible that universities could be run more efficiently.”

What is your criterion of “efficiency?” Given the distinct traditions and cultural ambience of independent universities, why do you propose “amalgamation” as a contender? Are your criteria purely financial (are you an accountant?) or do you have superior criteria (i.e., philosophical/cultural/historical) to support your claim? Write back soon.

  7. ^^ “why do you propose “amalgamation” as a contender? “

I agree that each University has it’s own unique character and that is one things that draws people to them. I wouldn’t want to see that lost. And maybe amalgamation has a lot of baggage as a word so it was not a good choice on my part. However, I suspect that there are a lot of possibilities for administrative efficiencies (payroll and accounting, computer systems, etc.) and academic efficiencies (shared department heads, common undergraduate curriculum, etc.) across the university system.

  8. call me elitist but I’d still prefer my surgeon have university medial school training, not just street cred.

but business degrees seem to be just a lengthy roll of toilet paper

  9. apparently a $30,000 roll of toilet paper that never gets used for it’s intended purposes.

  11. What is up with people being banned for exercising their right to be arse tards to each other on a semi- anonymous public forum?
Even I cannot believe what some people say to each other on this Bitch board, but it is no worse than heard in any pub or at any social function on a Sunday brunch kind of morning.
    WTF?

  12. Ha, they made this into a movie (ironically called “Acceptance”) which tanked. I would love to see it, but it’s a failing movie. That’s shooting for the stars and ending up in the sydney tar ponds.

  13. How to pay for free education:
Scrap the train project, there’s 2M,
Reverse lane on the bedford high? GTFO! there’s probably another 2M,
Ferry between NS and NY? Scraped. Theres 2M, no one uses it anyways, just like the train.
Christmas trees? How about no. $25,000 saved.
Zebra Crosswalks? How about we throw both the pedestrian and driver in prison with hefty fines: 10B I assume around here.

Easily be able to afford uni/college for free just with those purchases the city council is preparing to approve/has already approved.
