I get it, I get it. You’ve got the most amazing software out there. Your precocious little brain child iPhone is the most popular kid in school. Get over your pretentious idiotic self already! I HATE APPLE! (but I love your products…)

  1. Don’t play into the hype man!

I have a macbook. I made the switch because, honestly, vista is a steaming pile of shit and I wanted a laptop that would last relatively problem free (and last longer than your average PC system — macs have a GREAT longevity rep)….and almost a year later *knock on wood* my system works as fast and as smooth as when it first came out of the box. I’ve used computers with vista recently and I wanted to smash them — so incredibly bloateddd. I was ok with XP, but in all honesty, I’ve never had a computer run so fast and seamless as my macbook.

It took a while to get used to it, and at first I wasn’t so sure about it, but as I hear almost every apple convert say: I’ll never go back. When it’s time to get a new laptop I’ll be getting another macbook fo’ sho’. (don’t talk to me about the ipod tho — I love my ipod but its battery life on its current generation, and it’s convenient design changes as to cross market new accessories just pisses me off)

So don’t hate on da playa’ my friend! Apple has A LOT to be cocky and pretentious about 😛

  2. I camped on Windows 98 until 2005, I can stay on XP until the next OS comes out.

Wouldn’t mind a new macbook, but when you find a relatively new HP laptop for 100 bucks, I can live with it pretty easily. :]

  3. Alright… here goes. Apple can take a long walk of a short pier. All of it is extremely overpriced. Why would you spend 2200 bucks on a MacBook when you can spend 1600 on a better performing HP or Toshiba? Don’t give me that “they’re better performing and aren’t as succeptible to viruses” BS either. In fact, the new MacBook Pro overheats, due to the lack of a proper fan, which seems like a significant design flaw in favour of form factor. Seems like Apple markets their products to the people who like the shiny things. Not to mention, the lack of any AMD support frustrates me to no end. Oh, and as a final note: I have the cure for Vista’s instability problems. Get Professional or Ultimate, don’t cheap out on Basic. Secondly, spend and extra 20 bucks on a stick of RAM. You’ll find all of those issues will melt away.

  4. as a note to fevers comment. I have basic vista and i got rid of all my problems with extra ram as well

  5. To each their own, but I started using Macs a couple of years ago and I’m now a certified convert. I agree that the price can be prohibitive for the average person, but if you’re a professional who works with any type of media on regular basis, Mac is the clear choice.

  6. Only on a $3000 MacBook pro, or a $2400 24″ iMac… Actually, as far as media processing goes, it’s a misconception. Any computer with a decent processing suite and dual-core or quad-core processors can process just as well. In fact, you’ll find most professionals using Dell or HP to do most media conversion as it’s cheaper to run, especially most companies cannot afford a $2500 dollar machine on top of a $3000 software program. The misconception stems from Pixar’s use of Apple, but let’s not forget that was Steve Job’s baby.

  7. Never had problems with XP that I couldn’t fix myself. That included typing lines into command prompt to fix problems and reverting registries and reformatting. For the average user those aren’t easy problems to fix.

So I bought the new Macbook Pro. Yes, it was expensive but so far it’s running great without issues. I did manage to fry the usb ports, granted it was not the fault of the laptop rather the faulty usb port I was using and the fragile nature of the usb design itself. I took it in and it was fixed in a week under warranty.

I don’t really know why there’s always a PC vs Mac debate, they both serve different purposes ultimately. But if I had the choice in the future and money wasn’t an issue it would be Mac hands down. It’s cleaner and the way the software works ultimately makes more sense than the ways Microsoft’s does.

  8. Baa- I like my Think Pad just as much as I liked my Powerbook G4 17incher. The problem with the Mac was it felt like a yuppie computer. Something some daddys money university student at a Starbucks drinking over priced lattes would use. I felt like a jackass carrying it around. Oh the hard drives die on them too just like any other laptop and their not really any easier to use either.

  9. My dad has 4gigs of ram and vista premium and it STILL frustrates the shit out of me.

I love my macbook. It runs like a fucking dream and the battery life is INCREDIBLE. I wouldn’t give this fucker up for all the HPs and Toshibas in the world.

  10. I’m just a self proclaimed expert in the area and have only started building out boxes in the last year or so but…..

Fever, avoid Tosh like they want to lick your grandmother.
They have much worse overheating issues on all their laptops and it’s widely known. they also choose to ignore this fact and keep making crap heatsinks model after model. I’ve disassembled one of their lappy’s several times recently. Also, throwing more hardware at the problem doesn’t really fix it…. but can be the easiest way to get around an issue.

me0w, it’s not the obvious choice, not by a long shot AND I like my mice with 2 buttons and a clickwheel, thanks.

Vista was such a steaming pile, they’re essentially skipping it. After the cash they sunk into it, that should tell you something. More bloat than a Rosie O’Donnel cruise ship buffet on free desert night.

    Kitty, I’ve accepted you’re a mac fan… it’s sad, but true.
One day, hopefully you will see how they’re utterly raping you and you’re paying extra for it. (you know you can buy any cheapo setup with linux and install OS X just the same???)

Calico, thanks for bringing up starbucks… as apple is the starbucks of computers. Trendy and not nearly enough for the cash you shell out.

All, the software out of the box is usually crap. If you’re going to use it with regularity, you’ll need to tweak the settings to suit your needs.
It’s like a recipe…. too much or not enough of one ingredient and the whole thing goes to shit.

  11. Macs and PCs are apples and oranges. Macs are fine if you’re surfin’ the net, writing letters to mom, recording music and, like others here said, working with media. I remember asking once, what kind of sound card is in a mac? The sound card IS the mac! If you need to connect to a large network, your mac protocols will give your administrator endless headaches. Want to install a enterprise level software of any kind? Serve a database or a web server? Good luck with yer puny little mac. Too proprietary for my liking

  12. Like I said, to each their own. I’m only speaking from my experience and the experience of colleagues in my particular industry. For us, the initial investment in a Mac may be expensive, but we see the savings when it comes to software like Final Cut Pro. The alternative to FCP is either spending around $15/hr on an editing suite, or dropping $35,000 on Avid. As well, you’d be hard-pressed to get any of the sound/music guys I know to give up their Macs. So in my line of work, it does seem a clear choice.
Price seems to be a point that keeps coming up, and I realize that’s a huge drawback for many, but dissing Mac for being pricey seems a bit silly to me. Just because a Jaguar is expensive, doesn’t mean it’s not a damn fine car.
But like Kay said, comparing Mac to PC is like comparing apples to oranges, trying to infer one is superior to the other is pointless. Both have their merits, depending on what you intend to use them for.

  13. halifilm, no, I just work in the industry. Editors seem to be in short supply around here, let me know if you find some good ones 🙂

  14. You guys looking for film editors? Please let me know where to send my resume… I have a recent demo reel too…

  15. zZz: I didn’t spend the $$$ on the macbook — gift from the parental units for graduating…so…no raping here 😉

See, for me, it’s kind of like lulu lemon….I’d never BUY anything from there myself, but I’d gladly accept a lulu jacket, oh, if say NGF for example, bought me one.

Although, I probably WILL get another macbook when it’s time to replace this one. I’m thoroughly impressed with its performance…and at one point I was pretty anti apple (like you, I thought they were overpriced and not worth it….oh how wrong I was :P)

  16. Kitty, I must confess, I own an ipod shuffle.
as you said though, it was handed down when I got a samsung P2 and the missus liked it more.

(she’s got season 2 of venture brothers along with all her music on it so I can’t really argue… it kicks ass)

  17. Bastard Fish, I would definitely like to speak with you further. Is there a way to PM on this site? I just don’t really want to broadcast my personal info/email on here…

  18. Sorry to butt in, but just a suggestion:
Set up a random named gmail/hotmail account like lovinglife did for pretty kitty. Get Bastard Fish to send you his resume/contact info there. You can call him from there.

  19. Thanks for the suggestion, Miles, that will indeed work.

Bastard Fish, I just sent you an email. Talk to you soon.

  20. Who the hell would set up a database or web server on their laptop??? Regardless of brand, you’re not going to do that. It would have to be a dedicated server, not a laptop. No laptop would be capable of being a database server or half decent web server either.
Sorry, but Mac’s are overpriced regardless of what you’re going to do with them. Upgrading/modifying them is almost impossible compared to a PC. One major drawback is you can’t play games on them like you can with a PC. But as meOw says, they have their uses and both have their merits depending on what you’re using them for. To each their own.

  21. maclaptop. You speak from the side of your head about things that you have no idea about. Nice try, though.

  22. May I refer all to this article? The article speaks directly to Mac-based development despite the URL naming convention.

    http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/04/26…

I use both PCs and Macs for my work, so please don’t label me a Mac zealot.

My preference, a Mac hands down. Far, far fewer headaches. And gaming is no problem at all. Anyone with an Intel Mac can switch into Windows if they have a Windows only game. Given the leap in adoption of the Mac over the last few years, more and more game houses will be releasing for both platforms.

  23. yeah, they run windows like linux runs xWindows. no biggie…
and onlythetruth…. it’s quite possible, as it’s really the same hardware and audio/video graphics card upgrades are really the only inconvenience about laptops… neither of which are needed for servers/db’s. Hell, I had a db2 db on my laptop when I was in school which helped a hell of a lot with my database basics course.
not overly practical, since you could buy an equally powerful box for cheaper (because the LCD isn’t needed for servers all the time) but can be done in a heartbeat.

  24. zZz, yes, it is possible, but tell me of any mission critical databases or enterprise level webservers are running on a Mac or a laptop.
In your case you were able to get away with it since it was only a small database and wasn’t stressed very heavily. When you’re talking teraflops of data, Mac is no where to be seen in the industry.
