Omfg, if I hear one more goddamn sob story about these overpaid clowns coming back from the west without a quarter in their pocket, I think I’m going to lose it. You didn’t have the qualifications to shovel SHIT before you got out there, but suddenly two years of overpaying you 150Gs to drive a truck in a circle entitles you to moan about compensation for the “lifestyle you’ve become accustomed to” after blowing every goddamn cent on man-toys, weed and ridiculous looking pickup trucks? Fuck off. One last thing: Remember that new philosophy you adopted out there? That pro-west, “Fuck you, I got mine!” attitude? Right back at you, cowboy. —Speck

  1. A fool and his money are soon parted. There’s a statistic that something like 70% of lottery winners go broke within 5 years. These are really the same type of people.

  2. Ditto – at least to those who acted like twits and did not plan ahead for the bust times which eventually come in resource based industries.

  3. As the wife of one of these cowboys, get your damn facts straight. The reason my husband, and 99% of the other people he works with, works for, and know from atlantic Canada that were travelling out west for these “overpaying” jobs is because it costs more than what we both could ever hope to earn the buy a house, help our family, help our community, and basically just pay our climbing power bills, taxes, grocery bill, phone bill, etc. Yeah, there are a handful of tools that did waste their earning on man toys and obscene upscale lifestyles, I personally know 2, out of hundreds, if not 1000+ people that are/were working out west. Sorry we got used to being able to pay our bills on time, sorry we no longer have the extra cash to pour into our local businesses instead of spending it in low priced, international superstores like walmart and giant tiger. Sorry that we no longer earn enough to pay out more in income tax than we both used to make a year combined, which used to go towards things like health care, infrastructure, etc. I’m sorry that we no longer have the means to save for our own retirement or help put our children through college so that they don’t have to leave their home for weeks and months at a time just so they can break even. We do have a lot to be grateful for though. We are grateful that we both still have jobs, even though we are getting paid about 50% less. We are grateful that for a short period of time, we weren’t at each others throats, fighting about money, fighting about how we are going to pay our bills and provide for our family. We are grateful that we have a loving and supportive family, but we wish we could support them. Do you know how it feels to be 35 years old and have to choose between paying the power bill and mortgage or buying groceries and gas? I’m sure a lot of people do. Do NOT judge an entire group of people based on the actions of a few.

  4. ^^^ NSF, kudos to you if you are one of the smart ones who paid down debts or put money aside.

Nobody begrudges someone else’s success. But people do hate to see someone waste a golden opportunity. And the numbers of people who blew their boom time windfalls over the years, in places like Alberta and Texas, are enough that there are t-shirts and bumper stickers with the saying “Please God let there be another Oil Boom I promise not to piss it all away next time.” Google it.

Here’s an article from 2007 talking about the previous crashes and anticipation of the current one:
“There were a lot of wealthy people, before the crash, blowing their money,” the 68-year-old Calgarian recalls. “When the crash came, a lot of people went broke — they never put away for a rainy day.”

  5. lol this is harsh as hell, but it’s true. My facebook is a quagmire of oil related memes from these people

  6. Between 40 and 45% tax is what the average Canadian pays out of every dollar they earn. From the payroll tax to the tax on every “other” item they purchase (less a few exemptions).
If your not a professional, it is very hard to survive in Nova Scotia- The only way most (not all) average people can make enough money to get the basics of life in the Atlantic Provinces is to work in the underground economy, break the law or move to where their is a demand for honest hard working folk.
Kudos’ for the smart ones who were able to get a piece of the pie. What they do with it is not others concern, most of us have mismanaged money at one point or another. Part of the learning tree. Their will always be complainers- thus this column.
Give people a reason to stay!

Every body seems to be missing the point? The excuse seems to be that we have too small a population to sustain enough tax moneys for the base infrastructure to maintain our, schools, hospitals, roads, parks, old, black, indigenous, white, purples etc.
    – Who does the math and where the duck is our money going? Convention centers, road construction, bluenose 2. Our decision makers are allowing big corporations and private companies use our tax dollars for their interest -not ours. Who elected these guys? Who examines the investment of our tax dollars- I see millions of Dollars going to the wrong places? Why are we lending Banks money? Irving? Forgivable loans – pulp mills, Ferries? Invest in sustainable business only- The money can be put to job creation in other markets – perhaps tourism , do we still have that industry or has it gone the way of the film industry.

IF WE PUT OUR MONEY IN THE RIGHT PLACES- OUR SCHOOLS, HOSPITALS, ROADS AND OTHER PUBLIC FACILITIES WOULD BE In GOOD SHAPE. THEIR WOULD BE LESS MONEY TO THE BIG CORPERATIONS AND MORE FOR THE AVERAGE , HARD WORKING PERSONs. OUR NEIGHBOURS COULD AFFORD HOMES AND GROCERIES – THEY WOULD STAY PUT!

As with developed nations the cost of everything is going up. Power, Water, Cable. I am in the service industry as a trades man, I visit the homes of these vested managers, owners operators. The money is here. The money is in Nova Scotia. It is unbelievable the wealth in our area. The distribution of wealth is the problem, the unions are the problem. The union leaders, politicians and the corporation owners cry poormouth to the general public then rush off to their third or forth trip down south to vacation. I’ve never seen so many poor rich people. Remember that the next time you hear one of these persons cry about rate hike due to the price of whatever or the Canadian dollar.
Until they fix this, it will continue to be survival of the smartest- Its a pretty sad day when a person can not get ahead by working hard and honest. Broken is the word of the day.
If it takes moving away to put a roof over your head then so be it. Welcome home!

Halifax boasts having the 6th total amount of “the smartest people in Canada” Anybody know where they are?
As for me, grade 10 , give me some slack please
