So the buses were not running on Valentines Day until the evening. We needed you at work. We were closed on the 13th but we needed you in so you wouldn’t get further behind in your shit. When we asked you to take a cab, you assumed that we were paying for it. I found this out when you handed me a receipt of over 35 bucks, telling me I need to either reimburse you from the petty cash or cut a cheque. Excuse me?? It’s not the employer’s fault that the buses weren’t running. When I told you this, you tell me it wasn’t your fault either and that it wasn’t your fault that you have to take the bus. How was is not your fault though, really?! You don’t have a fucking car! Everyone with cars managed to get in, at least late. When you insisted we reimburse you, I told you no and to get a car. You respond “with that shit 28 thousand salary you guys pay me?!”. Hey bud, the door is right there if you want to leave. The employees with cars had to spend time shovelling their driveway and getting their vehicles out. And do we pay for their gas every day? Nope. So why should we pay for your cab ride just because the buses weren’t running? We’ve never told you to not take the bus and cab instead, did we? Nope. Fuck off with your entitlement. You’re not even a stellar worker. –Mr. Supervisor

  1. You are the supervisor. This decision is above your paygrade idiot. Just forward the request to accounts payable.

  2. “When we asked you to take a cab..” “We’ve never told you to not take the bus and cab instead, did we?”… Uh what. You asked him to cab. You sound like a really shitty employer.

  3. Technically, an employee is responsible for their own transportation to work. However, this is a very unusual circumstance with buses not running … and you did request that the person take a cab. I think it would have been a nice gesture of appreciation for the employee’s service to just pay the cab fare. On the other hand, if the employee leaves because of stubborn intransigence over every small thing (like this one-time cab fare) it will cost you far more for the effort to replace the employee – not to mention the cost and effort to train a new person.

The expression “cut off one’s nose to spite one’s face” comes to mind.

  4. If you need workers who can get into work without public transit you’ll have to pay them more than 14 bucks an hour.

  5. And fuck those “entitled” car owning employees for not having the “stellar” foresight to set their alarms for 2AM so they could get their shovelling done in time to be punctual at work. If you were my employee, bub, I’d be handing you your ass on a plate with your attitude, supervisor or not. We all knew a storm was coming and the buses would likely be stopped. What did you or your company do to ensure the one carless employee could make it in? Did you or anyone else offer to carpool. “Nope.”

  6. Your “entitled” employee’s main means of transportation was out of service that day, so you should have either let him have the day off or provided a free (for him) ride in to work (eg. you go pick him up, or company pays cab fare). Is he essential staff? Is he a policeman, a fireman, a paramedic, or nurse?? Likely not. He is probably an office worker.

Stop being such a cheap ass; what is 35 bucks for cab fare for ONE damn employee, anyway, to the company? As for the “get a car” comment: Oh, fuck you. You pay a lousy 28K salary. Know how I got to work back when I was making under 30K?? The fucking bus! Who can afford a car on 28K?!

  7. Dear Supervisor – Labor and Workforce Development would tell you to go fuck yourself. Were you to terminate the employee over this, they would win an award for wrongful dismissal and if they were to take you to small claims court over the cab fare they would win that too, plus cost.

You really shouldn’t be a supervisor – I’m guessing based on that ridiculous rant that even if you were told by a JUDGE that you were out of line, you still wouldn’t get it. There are very few places where you would actually get away with treating your staff like that.

  8. This is the stupidest bitch I’ve read in a while, K one Valentines Day, the roads were frigging awful, At my place of work, they paid for people to get cabs in, and the manager personally picked up employees in his company car who didn’t have their own vehicles, Two, you can’t order your employee to buy a car and if even if he did, Does he really want to risk sky high insurance rates, and possibly even severe injury for your lousy paying job? and for the record I have a Jeep 4×4 vehicle and I go to work even in the worst weather, but I only live ten minutes from work, and I’ll admit its not smart being on the roads in that shit even if I’m good at driving

  9. No office worker was that essential last Monday/Tuesday that they had to be out on the roads risking their lives to get to work. My rule is: if the buses aren’t running, then I’m not going out and driving on the roads, especially after the police told people to stay off of them unless absolutely necessary. Even essential personnel in hospitals were offered accommodations close to the hospitals to facilitate their attendance at work. So fuck off, OB. I swear the less you pay people the more you expect.

  10. My workplace actually told us all to stay home (multi-billion dollar company, BTW), and my husband’s workplace was providing cab fare for anyone who made the effort to come in. Sounds like a 1950s attitude you have about entitlement.

  11. I had a friend who made $28k a year. Not pleasant I tell you! One paycheque went to rent and only rent! The rest was mainly living expenses! What’s your net?! $800? $850?
