Am I just confused or did you tweet a giant rainbow display with “Happy Pride” signage this week? Last I checked Pride is celebrated during July here in Halifax. LGBTQ+ Pride (month/week) is celebrated at different times in different parts of the world. Seriously–do a quick google check. Shockingly us queers don’t walk around saying “happy pride” to each other every day, though a lot do during Pride week, which as I’ve already pointed out, is during July here in Halifax, where your library is located. You really should coordinate holidays/events with your local community, don’t you think? I find it particularly appalling with all the controversy and debate over pinkwashing, that you would attempt to ride the coattails of Pride more than a month before our Pride kicks off; for what reason? Promote your brand? More Twitter followers? We’re more than just rainbows and parades BTW. Promote diverse LGBTQ+ displays/events all year long and only celebrate Pride, during Halifax Pride. —done with you

This one? HPL promotes almost all of it’s programs and events well in advance. You know, so people actually know things are going on there. Don’t like it, don’t go. Nitpicking everything is rubbish.
Well then, you sound super fun. Good luck with that!!

Look at this! Halifax Pride, advertising Pride events for Pride week next month? How dare they, right OP?
International Pride month is June (because of the anniversary of the Stonewall riots falling in this month), which a “quick google check” would tell you. The Library will have displays up during our local Pride week as well, and I fail to see the problem with celebrating Pride more than once a year. Do you visit the library? I’ve seen no fewer than 5 LGBTQ+ themed displays at Central this calendar year alone. Also, apparently this will surprise you, OP, but there are queers working at the library too — kind of weird of you to assume this was an us vs. them situation.
Newsflash: The person who created this display is a lesbian who’s active in the queer community. We don’t just have to celebrate pride in Halifax, we can join the rest of the world for the month. You’re barking up the wrong tree, find someone who’s actually oppressive to fight with.
a) pinkwashing involves gathering profit on the backs of marginalized queer communities. words mean things- maybe try thinking about that?
b) there have been lots of LGBT displays at the library this year already, guess you haven’t been in to look.
c) LGBT people actually do work at the library and provide input/plan pride displays.
d) it is pride month internationally and we are still at a point where visual representation matters. putting up a display for international pride month does not take away the importance of halifax’s own pride week. and there will be displays for that too.
e) sounds like you just want to play more radical than thou.
It’s international pride month. Do a quick Google check. I don’t see anything wrong with the library putting up a visual symbol of support for international pride. It’s not like they’re ignoring the local pride month to celebrate this month instead. Why can’t they do both? Don’t forget that LGBTQ+ people work at the library too!
I guarantee every dislike is the op being salty. 🙂
I can’t believe you’re angry that the library acknowledged world pride.
