Every single cab in this city is busy every single weekend, and, for some reason, we still don’t have Uber. Let’s get Uber, or more cabs to accommodate this city’s population. The amount of times I’ve received a recorded message from cab companies this fall telling me that the number was unavailable is ridiculous. And it’s not at 2 or 3am in the morning when the bars are emptying out: It occurs anytime there is a minor event in this city or the slightest inclement weather. People are trying to get around safely and responsibly and we don’t have enough cabs to do so. Maybe Uber isn’t the solution, but something has to be done.

  1. It’s so confusing to me that the number of cab licenses is limited, yet it is ridiculously difficult to get a cab when I need one. Sure, the times I’m calling are busy times and they don’t need that many drivers all day every day. But have they not heard of part time or casual employees?

  2. If you’re looking for safety, Uber is the last thing Halifax needs, or do you consider what might as well be hitchhiking in a random stranger’s car to be a secure way to get around? Uber has had its share of rape allegations and just because it’s an online service doesn’t make it any safer. Perhaps more affordable taxi rates would be better (you know, because taxis registered in Halifax are easier to track when things go wrong, unlike Uber). It shouldn’t cost me $50 to get a cab from Lower Sackville to Halifax. Low-income people cannot afford that and are stuck taking buses and sometimes waiting in the dark for half an hour for one to show up. More buses, security measures at bus stops and terminals and also the monitoring of those more secluded bus stops might be a way to at least prevent some of it, if not an overall fix.
