Dear my employer,
I understand that we have an obligation to our clients…but we also have an obligation to ensure the safety of our staff. Forcing non essential employees to go to work in a blizzard is DEPLORABLE.
There was no safety plan of any kind–even with advanced notice of the storm. As a result, people who did not need to be at work had to make their way in–risking their own lives and the lives of those who might have to assist them had they not made it to work. Hopefully HR will get a few complaints and this won’t be permitted to happen again.
BTW If you ask employees to go to work in a dangerous storm and they die…you are liable. –Non-essential employee

Fair enough.
So then is it also deplorable to ask businesses to pay for non-essential employees to stay home…?
clearly OB is a buttercup. I know a guy that drove in from Truro. And he was 30 min early for his shift
You’re right OB. And under Labour Standards Code, you can refuse to go to work if conditions are not safe. Should the police issue a request that people stay off the road, you can refuse work without penalty. Mind you, the employer is not obligated to pay you but good ones allow you to take earned-time off in lieu or to make it up by working extra hours throughout a pay period. Ask your employer about their understanding of the Labour Standards Code dictum and see what they say. And remember, you don’t need to work there; its your choice, so your problem is partially your own.
Call in sick, problem solved. You’re welcome.
Hey Tickle!
Quote the section of the Labour Standards Code to which you refer
How did anyone get anywhere during that blizzard?! Considering there was actually no transportation available (aside from own, which would have been stupid, then again, we live in Halifax).
ARE they liable for that though? I haven’t seen any law to that effect…
