I live in an apartment building that has a number of residents who get about in a wheelchair. I observed from a distance a disabled person struggling with the door in her chair. I struggle with the same door when there’s wind. When the fuck is the largest property management company in the city going to step up and put an automatic closer on the main door at least? It’s a sin to watch these people struggle to get HOME! —Open for Change

I do agree that wheelchair accessability could be better in this city. The ramps are pretty steep to have to puh your self up. Next time you should go over and help the poor women instead of watching her struggle.
Wheelchair accessibility in this fucking burg sucks pretty badly – I never realized just how bad until Hub-Unit was using the walker full-time. Even some of the so-called handicapped doors are total fucked, opening out towards you, instead of inside.
Or the ones where you have to wheel yourself all the way over to the other side and by the time you wheel yourself back over the door is starting to close!!!
The disabled are treated like utter shit in this city. When my mom was wheelchair bound last fall I never really realized how many cocksucking assholes congregate in public places. Someone actually yelled “fer fuck sake!” when she was wheeling herself down a crowded grocery aisle because they couldn’t get around her fast enough. All i can say is that they’re lucky I didn’t hear them say that because they’d end up in a full body cast by the time I was done with them. GOD FORBID someone’s mobility issues fuck with your oh so important schedule. Here’s a hint: if you’re in THAT much of a hurry, don’t go to the grocery store when everyone’s getting off work and going there.
Blah blah blah. Don’t treat the disabled differently, and they whine. Provide for them and they cry being discriminated against. There’s just no pleasing them. Hopefully your building is on a street street.
I was really appreciative of a local Grocery stores, motorized shopping cart when I was last immobilized with an injury.
Being out here in the boonies, there aren’t many multi story building, but even the local corner store had 3 steps & thats too many when you’re incapable of climbing 1.
I have never had a problem holding a door for a handicapped person. I have also never had them insult me or in any way show displeasure for doing something like that.
seb, dude, one of these days, someone is gonna really fucking pound you one. that is just not fucking cool, even for me. just hope you never get to be one of these people, and have people like you around to sneer at you. all things in life have a turn about point.
PK- were you at Scotia Square yesterday (Thursday) around 5p? I think I walked passed you…
Seb, I hope to fuck you never are disabled. ‘Cause if you are, you’re in for a real fucking treat. Then to have your rat brain bleating ‘there’s no pleasing them.’ It’s not about pleasing anyone, you dolt, it’s about accessability. Fuck.
Sebaceousness is it’s own disability and it doesn’t even rate a telethon. I’d sooner be Gumby in an iron lung than a yuppie in an SUV.

just because you’re debilitated doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a recreational pastime…

Bahawhawhaw – thanks for that, Ivanski.
That said, hang on, Gumby – Jebus is here to save you!

I’m growing quite fond of you, Seb. You are very predictable. I would be horribly insulted by your words if I didn’t think you were just a caricature of a douche. I know you’re really a very sweet little sissy maid with a butterfly tattoo on your tramp stamp area.
You sweet little bitch.
If I was gay I would toss your fucking salad like a Ronco Salad Shooter.
Oh, and by the by.
Accessibility does suck a hind tit. A place like Jane’s On the Commons I would go to every day, and they could easily make the front step into a ramp/step. Instead I give my money to a place like Saege or the Turkish Delight, who are very accomodating.
There is a difference between, ‘assistance’ and ‘condescending patronization’, you just have to be aware of your position between the two.
Oh, and don’t expect a bunch of simpering gratitude for your magnanimous efforts in helping the handicapped (self-righteous sarcasm).
I have a lot of upper body strength and learned early to use my momentum to open all kinds of difficult doors. Speaking as an actual person with a disability, I don’t show gratitude when I have the door open already and someone sprints across 3 lanes of traffic, rips the door out of m,y hand, and then looks at me like I should be thanking them.
That said, if you get to the door first and open it, I say thank you, every time.
Like Hugeo said, don’t expect simpering gratitude. Expect the same “Hey, thanks” you would get from another able bodied person.
Nope, wasn’t me! I was still at work at 5pm and got the bus on Barrington further down to go home.
Maybe there’s an imposter PK running around!!! heehee!
It’s a delicate balance, I find, when it comes to helping those who are disabled. Some people, like wheelie, are perfectly able, in most instances of opening doors for themselves, for example, and I don’t like portraying the idea that I don’t think the disabled can do anything for themselves. If I see someone struggling I’ll help — but usually I find it best to treat them like any other able bodied person — I hold the door for everyone if I”m first, but usually only offer assistance either when asked or when I see someone struggling.
Though, I always hold doors for seniors and I always let them go ahead if I can see they have mobility issues. This morning I let an older guy with a walker go ahead of me in the coffee line because it seemed harder for him to be standing up than me to stand up (even with my sore ass body). And I always let seniors get on the bus first. Except that one guy who pushes to get in front. He’s just an old bastard and he can fucking wait till the end of the line for all I care.
Are we all in THAT much of a hurry that we can’t let someone who’s having a harder time being mobile than us go ahead on a bus or hold a door open for them (and even wait if they’re a distance away)?
