How many children have to die before people realize that to protect themselves, their children, and the rest of the population, they NEED to get themselves and their families vaccinated? I have two close relatives that, because of medical conditions, cannot get vaccinated against diseases that could make them very sick and even kill them. So they have to rely on the rest of the population being vaccinated, it’s called herd immunity.

Seeing what’s going on in California, loss of herd immunity, outbreak, un-vaccinated infants dying needlessly, it scares the shit out of me. Because I hear it here all the time “vaccines cause autism”, “they put mercury in those things”, “big pharma is paying doctors to keep us sick”.

How can people be so ignorant? People are actually dying from preventable illnesses, courtesy of Anti Vax fear mongering and their disgustingly irresponsible campaign of misinformation, and we have the technology to stop it! Yet people not only still reject it, but they fight against it! And attack the very people who are trying to save their lives. What’s the body count at now? 600 something? What will the number have to be before you’re convinced? —Vaccinated

Wake up and get vaccinated before it’s too late.

  1. Really though, it’s a shame it’s become acceptable and stylish to believe in crackpot stories like those surrounding vaccinations. People who don’t have their children vaccinated are clearly unfit to parent.

  2. As a parent, I hear about these things and it does cause concern for me. But I do believe getting flu vaccinations can limit your immune system.

I’m not a scientist or doctor, it’s just something I believe.

Therefore I do not get vaccinated, or my child vaccinated, for illnesses such as “chicken pox”, or a seasonal flu.

However; there is an epidemic rising where a rising number of parents are opting out of vaccination for life threating diseases. There is going to be a point where these diseases come back into population if it keeps up, and I’m sorry but the risk of not being vaccinated for that is much higher then the risk of autism potentially being triggered by vaccinations.

  3. Aren’t chicken pox and seasonal flu are life threatening too?

In my opinion, “just believing” in something regardless of what doctors and scientists say is a poor excuse to deny your children preventative medicine. We should never, “just believe” in anything, we should always demand credible evidence to base our decisions on. Especially when it comes to health.

And let’s make no mistake. I feel the OP didn’t stress this enough… there is no possibility of autism being triggered by vaccines. The studies that linked it were disproven multiple times. The guy who did them was even charged with misconduct and struck off the medical register in the UK. Turns out he was being paid by a law firm that was looking to sue the vaccine manufacturers. He was found to have fabricated evidence and lied in his report about a link between vaccines and autism. The medical journal that published it issued a retraction. He’s a criminal in my opinion.

And this entire Anti Vax movement started because of that one false article…

  4. yeah, but, o.p., what about all the bullshit hullaballoo, about h1n1. that was all just a big bullshit deal, and mostly made up. the only part that was true, was the people that died from being exposed to it. and we all know where that virus was cooked up at, don’t we?

  5. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immunologic_a…

Some of these additives are deadly to some individuals.

How about this instead: How about we stop using broad-based antibiotics everywhere? Get rid of all those antibiotic soaps, your innards will thank you. (and superbug breeding conditions will be reduced)

Viruses? Like cancer, a fact of life. Living isolated from nature is what requires us to use vaccines. A less sterile, but still clean environment presents the immune system with the type of constant challenge it has evolved to handle and reduces the need for vaccines.

Adjuvants… the whole concept is icky. Injecting dead viruses mixed with shark oil? Does not seem right. Most health professionals fail organic chemistry.

  6. The funny thing about H1N1 is that people keep saying that all those people who got vaccinated was a waste because there was no epidemic…but forget that there was no epidemic because all those people got vaccinated.

  7. …and while we’re on the topic, I’m sick and tired of those camera phones stealing my soul. It’s warped, twisted and marinated in bile but it’s MINE and I want it back.

  8. I’m H1N1 unvaccinated and proud. I never caught a cold, a sniffle, or H1N1 last winter. Meanwhile coworkers who did get the shot complained about a sore arm and then took sick days. Not everyone accepted the vaccine (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/daily-quotidien/1…). It’s a person’s choice if they want to get a vaccine or not….do go pushing this “herd” mentality.

  9. I’d like to know how a significant number of young people, all fully vaccinated against mumps, end up getting mumps.

The failure rate of the mumps vaccine seems to be fairly high. The failure rate of natural immunity to mumps (ie having had the disease as a child) is virtually zero.

Why was a mumps vaccine developed? Certain rare complications of this relatively harmless disease can cause serious problems, but then again the rarity of these complications argues against mass immunization for this disease.

Don’t get me started on chicken pox, measles, etc. all fairly innocuous if unpleasant childhood diseases which most folks over the age of fifty had as children and thereby acquired natural lifelong immunity. The argument for mass immunization for these diseases was never that the disease itself was particularly dangerous, but that in rare cases other problems would develop. The risk/benefit analysis on mass inoculations has been poorly handled, in my opinion.

Mass inoculation against relatively harmless childhood diseases, well-intended on the part of most of the medical community, has been an extremely profitable boondoggle for the pharmaceutical industry.

Once again, just look at any recent outbreak of mumps and ask yourself why most of those who get ill are young people who received the full program of mumps immunizations as children.

There is a case to be made for some immunization programs. The eradication of small pox around the globe (except for stocks in government bioweapons labs) was a tremendous accomplishment. But when people start yelling that I need to be immunized against what amounts to the common cold, my ass begins to twitch.

  10. There was information on vaccines in my Dr’s office, and they said studies proved that vaccines were ineffective for the elderly and babies under 2 years old….so why did/do they push the “elderly and babies” first crap?

  11. who needs vacines, when we have ancient eastern medicine, homeopathy, natural medicine ,and the q-braclet to protect us.i wonder why we even stopped using such ways of healing, they are clearly more effective then western medicine today.

  12. Getting vaccinations does not weaken your immune system. They’re not crutches. They actually strengthen it since they introduce the virus to your immune system in a form that doesn’t make you sick as well.

You’re getting immunizations mixed up with antibiotics. If you kill too much bacteria with antibiotic soap and so forth you can weaken your immune system because it’s not been exposed to those things. Exposing your immune system to vaccinations, however, does not weaken it.

No vaccination gives 100% protection against any illness. You can still get the illness, especially if you’re exposed to it through people who have never been vaccinated. The more people you have vaccinated the less likely you are to be exposed to the illness.

Finally, if you don’t get yourself vaccinated you can pretty much forget about traveling overseas ever. So if you refuse to get your kids vaccinated as children they’re going to be pretty much trapped in North America as adults.

  13. Living in a sterile environment is not what requires us to use vaccines. Before we lived in a such a sterile environment more people died BECAUSE we didn’t live in a sterile enough environment. People still died in the masses from diseases that we now have vaccines for… smallpox for instance. That constant challenge to our immune system took millions of lives while it was in the process of evolving to handle it, and even then the death rate was high. The only people who built up the antibodies were the few that didn’t die, and their children and so on. So the rest of us have to die so that a few can build up anti bodies the “natural” way without the inconvenience of getting stuck with an icky vaccine? I say fuck that, if we have the technology at our feet it’s immoral not to use it.

There is no magic solution. Just because viruses can build up immunity to antibodies doesn’t mean we should stop using antibodies and vaccines all together. It’s either go back to what the world was like before vaccines, sterility, and antibodies, when the average lifespan was 30ish and the child mortality rate due to disease was incredibly high compared to today… or keep developing new antibodies, new vaccines, to fight the evolving viruses.

It’s easy to say that viruses and cancer are a fact or life and that therefore we shouldn’t try to fight and cure them, when you aren’t dying from either. A defeatist attitude like that is the bane of progress.

  14. It’s easy to back up a fear mongering attitude for modern medical science with the old internet at hand. In this age of information, its super easy to spread non-factual information in order to get the paranoid going. Let these idiots do what they want, and maybe in the long run they’ll just die out from the same diseases the rest of us will be vaccinated from.

  15. Urban farmer: the reason so many people who were vaccinated against mumps but got it anyway is because the vaccine before 1995 wasn’t given in high enough doses to be really effective. So anyone who got vaccinated before then didn’t really have a strong enough immunity.

And those who were around pre-vaccination against MMR didn’t have to worry because they likely already had immunity. I know my mom and dad had mumps as a kid so they already had immunity.

Vaccines are important against high mortality diseases, but things like chicken pox? Unless the kid has a condition where the CP could kill them, or adults, who have a very hard time with CP, what’s the point of being vaccinated? It’s like a right of passage to have chicken pox as a kid, lol.

I got vaccinated against chicken pox last year because I never had it as a kid and don’t have any immunity. I’m an adult with an autoimmune disease so it was important for me to get vaccinated…but now it’s becoming standard within the juvenile population…thing *is*, what happens if a chicken pox outbreak happens when these kids are adults like the MMR? It’s dangerous to have CP as an adult….I’d rather have my kid go through the CP as a kid then rely on a vaccine which, like the MMR vaccine, might not be strong enough.

  16. If you don’t have the “luck” to have chicken pox as a child you can have it as an adult, which can kill you or lead to a lot of problems. Why take the risk and not get the vaccine?

  17. Harper is criticised for not acting on ‘evidence based research’.
I bet a lot of his non-supporters don’t like vaccines despite decades of evidence based research supporting their use. I think a question about vaccines should be on the long form census, the info is more use than knowing how long it takes to get to work or how many bedrooms I have.

  18. If you’ll note, Pav, I said that adults and children at risk should get the chicken pox vaccine. Getting natural immunity as a child is likely best than relying on a vaccine.

Like I said: I got my vaccine last year because I have a suppressed immune system and I’m an adult. I had a test done and it said I had no immunity. So I got the shot. No big deal. But for some random healthy 8 year old, it probably isn’t necessary.

  19. I don’t need shots for the flu, H1N1, mooshoo hullaballoo, etc. Frankly, I didn’t give a shit about H1N1 and knew it would be overblown. Take your media fear mongering and shove it sheeple.

  20. That random healthy 8 year old doesn’t get chicken pox as a kid then becomes a random healthy 38 year old that does get it and is suddenly a dead 38 year old when a simple vaccine could have prevented it.

Ironic that most of the media fear-mongering I’ve seen has been against vaccines, like that cheerleader down in the US that had the H1N1 vaccine and claimed it gave her a brain disorder that made her shake violently and unable to walk. That was a huge news story for weeks until she admitted she faked the entire thing, then suddenly it wasn’t a news story at all.

  21. Actually, more people died from the regular flu than from H1N1. It was blown way out of proportion by the media and really is the likely cause of a lot of other illnesses. Somebody I know got GBS soon after the vaccine and it was most likely caused by it.

However, my brother has a disease called VHL that causes tumours and he doesn’t have a great immune system so it was necessary for him to get the vaccine as he could be in real danger if he contracted it.

I think that whether or not someone gets a vaccine should be based on their own personal circumstances like Pretty Kitty says. (I mean how many kids don’t get chicken pox when they’re young??)

  22. I hadn’t heard that it was faked either… that’s insane! I had a hard time believing her, but to be totally faked. ugh. Media whore.

I got the H1N1 vaccine. I wasn’t going to, but my bf convinced me. He works in health research, and if it was good enough for him I might as well, it won’t hurt me. He claimed that side effects and media shit was totally overblown, it’s just another vaccine. Why NOT get it? And since one day when I went the line up was short… so I did it, and I didn’t die, and I didn’t get sick all year. But that’s just me.

  23. I want immunity,…
so you crazy people can’t vote me off the island….
    or out of the house….
or whatever other stupid phrase they use…

  24. i vote that they eat each other and use the bones for a raft to get off gilligan’s island^^^

  25. now there’s a little of the calamity I’m looking for.
start with the porky ones, they taste better….
or maybe the tall people so you can get a good head start on the base.
I’d feel like I won the lotto if Shaq where there.
Granted he’d be tough to kill but I’d feel a good sense of accomplishment as I’m munching away… I call dibs on the heart.

  26. You people all seem to think that everyone SHOULD survive a run in with a “curable” disease. Mother nature has spit out most of these diseases as a means to cull the herd and kill off the weak, thereby preventing the spread of their genetic material. It’s also a means of population control. If we keep saving everyone from every disease our natural immune systems will become moot and eventually non-existant. If we eventually cure all diseases and ailments, we’re going to overrun this planet and destroy it even faster. Ever since I’ve had a choice in the matter, I’ve said no to vaccinations. If I get sick, so be it. If I survive, it’s made me stronger and if I die, well that sucks, but them’s the breaks.

  27. PG, brains are quite fatty…. so I’m sure they taste delicious if you can get past the texture.
I envision it’s like eating extremely rubbery hamburg that tastes like chicken left sitting on the counter for a week.
Personally, I’m low on iron so I’ll be noshing on the deep reds.

and a second use for the skulls could be for a cup so we’re no drinking out of leaves or something…
    after all, we’re not savages.
    Let’s be civilized murderers… er… survivalists…

I completely forget where the hell I was going with this….

anyways, I’m thinking NeverWrong is just that in this case …
    or at least partially….

  28. ‘Dr’ Oldhand claims cancer is a virus. (Please don’t sneeze, I’d hate to catch your cancer.) That’s the thing about the LTWWB ‘doctors’. Being ill-informed is a requirement to passing the LTWWB medical standards exam. Consulting a real doctor is highly recommended.

  29. That being said, anyone coming on here for medical advice needs a different kind of doctor….

  30. I like how they got Bernard Fox to play Dr. Jinga Janga on Peewee’s playhouse. He also played the whiskey soaked RAF pilot with a death wish in ‘The Mummy”

  31. I heard Dr Bombay got lost while on the cway to a housecall at the Douglas’ Farm because Eb moved the damn phone pole and was last seen in Mayberry en route to Agent 86’s telephone booth. KAOS has likely has him now. “To the Idiotmobile…” Oops, wrong decade Batman!

  37. There were a whole raft of LSD induced abominations. The Vroom-Broom would have made an excellent stealth fighter.

  38. That was my FAVOURITE show when I was a kid! Okay, and the silliness on Get Smart, Bewitched, Green Acres and later WKRP and Monty Python was a welcome escape from the drudgery of homework too. Sadly, they no longer make good shows like these anymore. Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett, Mary Tyler Moore…gone from the screen but not forgotten.

Ironically, the Puffnstuff theme song is still attractive:) Double entendre, anyone? Hehehehe!

  39. H.R. Pufnstuf,
Who’s your friend when things get rough?
    H.R. Pufnstuf
Can’t do a little cause he can’t do enough.

    Once upon a summertime
    Just a dream from yesterday
A boy and his magic golden flute
Heard a boat from off the bay
“Come and play with me, Jimmy
    Come and play with me.
And I will take you on a trip
    Far across the sea.”

But the boat belonged to a kooky old witch
Who had in mind the flute to snitch
From her broom broom in the sky
    She watched her plans materialize
    She waved her wand
    The beautiful boat was gone
    The skies grew dark
    The sea grew rough
And the boat sailed on and on and on and on and on and on.

    But Pufnstuf was watching too
And knew exactly what to do
He saw the witch’s boat attack
And as the boy was fighting back
He called his rescue racer crew
    As often they’d rehearsed
And off to save the boy they flew
But who would get there first?

But now the boy had washed ashore
Puf arrived to save the day
Which made the witch so mad and sore
She shook her first and screamed away.

  40. I’m trying to think of any sort of text that isn’t “better than ‘nam flashbacks” ….
    maybe scientology pamphlets?
    I dunno…

  41. “Everybody Gets a Pap Smear” by Rosie O’Donnell.
I’d sooner do 8 years in Hoa Loa prison, eating pumpkin soup and getting the rope treatment.

That was one of my favourite practical jokes of the last year LOL. And it made me feel less bad for originally laughing my ass off when she was stumbling around.

  43. Pav: I NEVER said that adults shouldn’t get the vaccine. If you haven’t had CP by the time you reach adult hood then get the vaccine. But there’s no need to vaccinate children who will gain natural immunity to CP if they get it harmlessly as a child (if they are normal healthy children). As we’ve seen with MMR, the vaccines given before 1995 weren’t enough. I had to get another MMR shot, while my parents, for example, didn’t because they had mumps as children and had natural immunity.

Please, brush up on your reading comprehension skills.

  44. I had the basic vaccinations we all get as infants or toddlers but I’ve never had a single one since then. Is it just me, or are adult vaccinations a relatively knew thing? If I’m wrong tell me. I won’t be getting any now that I’m grown up.

I feel for your relatives OP, but I simply don’t trust the pharmaceuticals industry. Look into the fines the industry as a whole pays every year for violating laws and you too will have to reexamine your feelings about them and their products.

I believe the industry does the majority of the fear mongering with respect to disease.
