Cornwallis: Built Halifax personally with his own two hands, or racist scalp-collecting maniac—depending on who you talk to. Whatever to do with the statue? Enough! Time for a compromise. Take a hacksaw, Jebediah Springfield style, and remove a few inches just above the eyebrows. Let people peer down into that dark cranial cavity, and have it serve as a reminder of the actions he took to colonize our prosperous, egalitarian city. Or make it into a birdbath. Whatever. —#fuckclosetracists

  1. I disagree. There are two types of people in this city: those who rant on and on about how some white dude three hundred years ago was a scalp-collecting maniac and those who realize that removing a statue and swapping names of streets won’t change that. NOBODY honours Cornwallis; there are no parades, there isn’t a Cornwallis day, we don’t even learn about him in school (I didn’t, anyway). Nobody goes to the Cornwallis statue to have a drink with him like they do at Alexander Keith’s grave. My view is — take the statue down if that many people want it gone, I don’t care if it exists or not and I’m tired of hearing about it.

  2. This post was probably written by a 20-something which spent too.much on university and didn’t learn history. Scalps were taken on both sides but that is irrelevant. The Cornwallis debate became fodder for jokes and ridicule when the school after whom.he was named, decided to change it. But no scalps were returned and history was not re-written. OB, the Coast posted your Bitch as fodder for commenters not because it would change your narrow-minded world.

  3. Wow another OB who has never learned the saying:
“He who refuses to learn from the past, is doomed to repeat it.”

  4. just a bit of information, despite the scalp price edict, there really was very limited proof that scalps were actually collected. ive read of one example where 1 was collected after a particular raid on Dartmouth (Dartmouth massacre) and that comparatively speaking there were many more scalpings done by Acadian/Mi’kmaw warriors. in fact from what I read it was at least a 20-1 ratio of scalpings. considering this edict was enacted after several raids by Acadian/Mi’kmaw alliance bent on defeating british garrisons and settlements at the time, that at the time it was an eye for an eye edict. still barbaric that both sides were willing to do it, but still, not as bad as what some would like to pronounce in their narratives.

  5. The progressives and SJWs need to move on. The guy founded Halifax in a time that is totally different from today. Leave it alone.
