Thanh Phung and Jon Johannsson’s worlds collided when they were still teenagers. After he moved to her small town from Iceland, the pair—then high school seniors—got to know each through the school musical they were both involved in. Thanh ended up in the hospital later that year, and was touched by how much Jon was there for her. When she was all better, he finally asked her out. They celebrated 12 years together in January. Their wedding presented the rare opportunity for Jon and Thanh’s Icelandic and Vietnamese relatives to be together. So, they decided to host both a Vietnamese tea ceremony—which saw Thanh wear a vibrant red traditional gown—and Canadian wedding ceremony, during which she donned a gold and white Maggie Sotterro, last summer. “We decided to have the tea ceremony the evening before so that we could have time to celebrate in a more traditional Vietnamese way, paying respects to our ancestors and focusing on the joining of both families. For our North American style ceremony, we knew we wanted it to be outside and near the ocean, so Oceanstone Resort was a perfect choice.”
