Darrold Gould
Executive director, Bide Awhile Animal Shelter
With the SPCA, Bide Awhile is among the biggest animal shelters in HRM. “We’re so over-inundated with the big picture,” says Gould (pictured, with Spartacus), “we can use all the help we can get. How I look at is, if there’s 30 shelters out there, good, we need it; I’m turning away 30 or 40 animals a day, there’s no room for them.” Asked what other organizations people might want to support, Gould brings up the greyhound and lab rescue organizations. “They’re good groups that care about those species. Yes, I’d recommend them.” The greyhound group has placed several thousand dogs in the Atlantic provinces.

  1. I volunteer for Greyhound Pets of Atlantic Canada and it’s a great way for a dog lover who can’t own dogs to get a fix. Greyhounds are absolute sweethearts and just soak up any affection you can give. I love walking the dogs and the kennel is in a beautiful area so you get the benefit of a walk on a lovely oceanside country road with an animal who truly appreciates all the exercise and socialization*. GPAC are also always looking for foster parents to give greyhounds temporary homes before their forever homes. Fosters are screened much like potential adopters.
