Originally from Newfoundland, Curran started playing as a
busker in St. John’s in the mid-’90s “out of pure necessity.” She now
has four records under her belt since 2000—the last, War
Brides, was released nationally by Six Shooter records. The
follow-up is due September 1, called Hunter, Hunter.
The Coast: When you think of summer here in Halifax, what
comes to mind?
Amelia Curran: Summer is always a doozy that I have little
recollection of, and usually involves racing back and forth across the
country, which makes time pass too quickly. I’m that person—the one who complains about the heat, and then complains about
the cold a few months later.
TC: So, when you are here, what do you enjoy doing when the
weather is good?
AC: What’s great about Halifax is that you can spend 10
minutes in a car and be out of the downtown trudge and into the summery
greatness of lakes and beaches.
TC: And in summer 2009: Plans? Adventures? Anything happening
in town, any event, you are hoping to attend?
AC: I’m going to be on tour all summer—really excited to
hit the Winnipeg Folk Festival (where Elvis Costello is playing) and
the Calgary Folk Festival (where Mavis Staples is playing). The only
unfortunate thing is that I can’t be here to flip the bird to Paul
McCartney—save a seal, club a McCartney! What an asshole. I wonder if
he’ll know what province he’s in this time.
