Our reporters’ assignment: scour the couch pillows for loose change—limit $7—and hit the streets in search of delicious deals. That means regular menu items, not specials, going beyond the bargain standards of pizza and fast food. The more unexpected the discovery, the better.

The meals we offer here will surely whet your appetite. But just as surely, some worthy eats were missed.

What did we miss?

  1. $6.95 chicken/souvlaki dinners from Euro Pizza just past the rotary on st.marg’s bay road opposite the Needs Store. AMAZING and HUGE servings with much stuff made on site like the incredible tzatziki. Hidden gem!

  2. Ray’s at Scotia Square has really delicious food (the chicken and veggie plates, especially). You can get quite the plateful of stuff for $5.00 before 2pm, and $5.75 (I think?) after 2. It’s great food, Ray’s an awesome guy, and it’s cheap.

  3. There is nothing cheaper then Westcliffe. Be prepared to wait 45 minutes for that $3.50 burger and fries.

  4. Rudy’s in the basement of Founders Square, 1701 Hollis St., a different daily soup and a made to order sandwich for $6 and change. on a map: http://bit.ly/cdmB27 cozy enough seating among office junkies, windowless.

  5. Nick’s Place in the basement of the Maritime Center (On Barrington at the foot of Spring Garden) offers a bacon cheese burger, fries, and a can of pop for $6.50 every day. They’ve got breakfast specials as well up to 11am.

  6. Oasis has several under 7 dollar plates. New menu launches Monday, too! Have to wait and see what’s on that one.

  7. Have to agree with Sagi and dev0kan on this one. I go to Ray’s quite often now; that lunch special plate is awesome, and the kibbe is top notch. I ate at Nick’s every day when I worked at the Maritime Centre, and I’m telling you, you cannot find a better breakfast sandwich anywhere. Omelets are also first rate, and if you’re brave enough, you can try the deep fried sausage. I am not kidding. :O

  8. I was sad to see that Jacky’s Cafe Saturday morning authentic Chinese breakfast got overlooked again, that is some of the best food in the city for under $7, and a staple of my weekend diet. Also Mary’s Place Cafe got shafted as well, which is hands down some of the best food in this city!

  9. Yes, Ray’s falafel at Scotia square is really good. It’s quite healthy from my perspective and the chicken combo, yummy! He sure marinated those chicken in some special spices, and if you like lamb, try the kafta combo, it’s really really good! I think the combo is around 6.50 tax included. He’s a really nice guy and remember everyone’s favorite. Ray is the best! hands down.

  10. Jacky’s Chinese breakfast is super awesome, it runs from Saturday morning until 4:30 pm and offers traditional delicacies like sticky rice, fried bread, congee, turnip cake and other awesome stuff like shrimp dumplings and shrimp wonton noodle soup. It’s also ridiculously cheap and definitely deserves a shout out in the cheap eats.

  11. Haha it’s practically hidden – right next to Lawton’s inside the building on the northeast corner of Robie and Spring G.
You should definitely get the sticky rice…

  12. Check out the Spaghetti at the Italian Market on Young Street. The vegetarian Version with fresh Basil and nice Parmesan is only $6,95!! But you have to ask for it, since it’s not on their menu.

  13. Jessy’s Pizza on Barrington offers a medium pepperoni pizza (which is very generously sized and delicious) for 5.99.

  14. Why is pizza so crazy expensive in Halifax?! In Helsinki, one of the more expensive European cities, you can get a medium hawaiian pizza for $8.30 + tax at a major chain with dozens of stores. In Halifax you pay 20-90% more. Insane! Any advice on where to get a reasonably priced hawaiian now that Little Caesar’s on Queen Street is gone?
