Welcome to the ninth annual Best of Food readers’ poll. You, dear voter, are the most important part of Halifax’s most important bar and restaurant awards. These awards are based solely on what readers decide. The survey is open for voting from February 25 until noon on March 29, and anyone in Halifax can register below to vote (only one vote allowed per person). Registration is one of the key ways we prevent voter fraud and protect the integrity of the awards. Plus, your email address is how we’ll get in touch with you if you’re one of the lucky voters who wins a prize draw: This year’s grand prize is $1,000 in gift certificates at local bars and restaurants, with dining packages in smaller amounts also up for grabs. You must answer at least 10 questions in the survey for your vote to be counted and to be entered in the prize draws. And if you vote for a place with more than one location in Halifax like Tim’s or Cora’s or Steve-O-Reno’s be sure to give the specific location you’re voting for. That way we can find out exactly who is doing best.

To all those who are having trouble voting, on behalf of The Coast I want to say “that sucks.” We switched to the new survey system mostly because it’s better than the old system at finding stuffed ballots and other signs of cheating. We were warned that the survey might not display properly in some ancient web browsers, but even the oldest systems we tested on were able to deal with the sign in page without breaking, so these reports of sign in fail are a drag.
Ultimately we want everyone to be able to vote. And luckily the poll is open for the next month so there’s plenty of time to figure out individual technical issues. For sign in troubles, your Coast site membership info won’t work for the survey site. You have to click “create a new account” to register specifically with the survey site — your password and stuff can be the same as for the main Coast site, but you do need to do a separate registration. The good part is this registration will work for future Best of surveys and other polls we do, and if you already voted in Best of Music or the Oscars poll, you can use that sign in info here.
The other big issue that’s already coming up is a problem logging into the survey even after you’ve made an account. In testing, sometimes the system would take a few minutes before letting a brand-new account vote, although it should be instant. If you can’t vote right away with a new account, please give it a few minutes to get over whatever lag is going on, and try again. If it’s still not working, send an email describing the glitch to boftech [at] thecoast.ca.
And if you’re having any other problems, use that boftech[at]thecoast.ca email address and we’ll get you sorted out. Details about what isn’t working, as well as what version of which browser you’re using, will help.

The system won’t let me create an account. I fill in all the info, press enter, and the fields just go blank.
really fustrating, tried to create an account many times but it keeps clearing the fields and not telling me what i’m doing wrong…. turns me off to do the poll..too bad.
The “create account” system has a problem….me and my friends try 4,5times…still keeping blank there…doesn’t work at all…Is there a smart guy can fix the problem??

I would really like to vote for Two If By Sea in Dartmouth as they are absolutely amazing! However, the system is not letting me create an account! Can someone please fix this!

Wouldn’t work for me on Internet Explorer 8 (must be one of those “ancient web browsers”), but was able to do it using Firefox.

best food ever is at Finbars Irish Pub in Bedford, Try the “Boxty” and they have a real soup guru as well. The “Guiness” and “Smithwicks” unbeatable. Staff priceless, Thanks Phart
Calling all frustrated voters: We’ve made a big change to the way the survey is served, and that should work for 99 percent of browsers/computers/users. So use it by clicking on the big link that says Click here to get started. And if you’re STILL having problems, email me at boftech[at]thecoast.ca immediately because then things are really screwed.
There hasn’t been a comment about the survey being broken since we did the big fix yesterday afternoon. I’m tempting fate by asking… but… does that mean… could it be… that the fix worked? Obviously I hope so, but don’t necessarily expect so. If you’re still having trouble, tell me about it here or by emailing to boftech[at]thecoast.ca.

Are you shutting out votes on purpose by not allowing voters to create an account. “password case sensitive” when my caps lock is not on, just appears to be a manipulation or perhaps you are merely inept. Either way you are casting significant doubt on the results, which I for one will be noting when the “votes” are tabulated.

As a well known “foodie” once said, “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.” Abe had the right idea: dartmouthy and sanchez should both… get a life. If you don’t care about the process, then don’t vote – no one says you have to.
What’s with all the “I agree to pay all charges incurred by using this service” in the terms of use? I just wanted to vote for my favorite neighbourhood restaurant. This survey is too much.

This is dumb. I registered and then it told me that the survey had a different register system, but it doesn’t redirect you to that or show you the link or where to do it and I have no idea.
It told me there were no surveys available to me after I registered…what is THAT? It’s not the 29th yet….weird. I’ll try again later but yes, Richard, one must wonder about the validity of results when so many people are having trouble just getting in….. ~k~ to top it all off it wont let me post my comment unless I log in AGAIN (then:incorrect password-NOT-then it tells me I need to create a new account…yeah RIGHT) If you are reading this comment it is because I got in as a guest….I guess I’m the wrong demographic to have my account accepted???

AST campus is small, but with Soho Resturant on Campus we have the BEST food. ys
Soho kitchen at AST has the best meals, wholesome and delicious. Everything is made at the kitchen including the bread. It is the BEST! KR
