She is a seven-time winner of the Amnesty International Award for Human Rights Reporting, a three-time winner of the National Magazine Award, a winner of the PEN Courage Prize for her coverage of the African AIDS pandemic, and was an Ochberg Fellow in Journalism and Trauma at Columbia University.
