Congratulations to Matthieu Aikins. On Saturday, his Coast cover story “Unembedded in Afghanistan” took the prize as the country’s best Print Feature at the Canadian Association of Journalists annual awards. The CAJ calls the awards “Canada’s only recognition for the best in investigative journalism across the country” (“Unembedded” was up against stories from both the […]
Kyle Shaw
Loving the arrival of this mysterious climate event people are calling "spring".
Kyle was a founding member of the newspaper in 1993 and was the paper’s first publisher. Kyle occasionally teaches creative nonfiction writing (think magazine-style #longreads) and copy editing at the University of King’s College School of Journalism.
Meet the new Seaport Farmers’ Market
[image-1] The new Seaport Farmers’ Market is under construction on Marginal Road, one of those Halifax addresses best described by its relationship to other places: behind the train station, across from Garrison Brewery, beside the Pier 21 museum. In this way it is very much like the current Brewery Market market, where shoppers need elaborate conversations just to explain how to find certain vendors. “Oh, you don’t know where the Dutchman is? How about the place that has the apples and the fudge? What about those guys who make the omelettes, upstairs across from Ted Hutten? Great. OK. So. You’re
The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine
In this compelling look at 2008’s world financial meltdown, The Blind Side author focuses on a few money managers who won big when Wall Street bet wrong. Along with a tale of oddballs battling the system, you get an easy-to-swallow education. “The subprime mortgage market had a special talent for obscuring,” Lewis writes. “Alt-A was […]
Stephen Kimber crowned
The Coast was up for five awards at last Saturday night’s Atlantic Journalism Awards. With Coast colleagues Stephen Kimber and Tim Bousquet both nominated in the feature writing category, competition might have gotten ugly. But at the awards gala the whole Coast contingent, which included Kimber, Bousquet (also nominated for continuing coverage) and Sue Carter […]
Dinner is over at The Good Food Emporium
Some bad news for fans of The Good Food Emporium’s dinner menu: The kitchen’s closed. About six months ago the 2179 Gottingen Street eatery decided to expand beyond its always-popular lunch hours to serve dinner Wednesday through Friday. The menu featured several Korean dishes, as well as Jamaican jerk tofu and Thai green curry—in all, […]
Coast writers recognized
Being part of Team Coast means being surrounded by some of the most creative and talented people I know. It means being united in the cause of covering the hell out of Halifax, and knowing that although work can get stressful, at least it’s never boring. Can it get any better? Actually, it just did. […]
Bus reluctantly helps assault victim
You’re 15. You finish your shift at the downtown restaurant where you work, so you head to the bus stop to get a ride home. It’s 11 o’clock at night. Then two guys walk up to you at the bus stop and start causing shit. They ask for your phone, and when you don’t give it up one of the guys grabs you, holding you for the other one to hit with a piece of plastic pipe. A knife comes out, and you’re getting stabbed in the gut. But before they can kill you, a bus finally arrives. Are you
Game on: best video games and iphone apps of 2009
Batman: Arkham Asylum The apocalypse must be nigh because they finally went and made an awesome Batman game. I actually shouted, “I am the Batman” twice. PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Windows Fallout 3: downloadable content One of last year’s biggest games got way bigger with a slew of downloadable content. These five downloads made […]
Incredible Picnic postponed
The Incredible Picnic scheduled for this Sunday has been postponed a week, because of the stormy weather forecast. While this is disappointing news for all who were looking forward to the big local food celebration, if delaying the gastronomical gratification for a week means not sharing a picnic basket with Hurricane Bill, it’s hard to argue. And for the vehicularly inclined locavore keeners, the silver lining in this swirling cloud is that two Incredible Picnic venues outside of town—in Windsor and Antigonish—are indoor, and will be going ahead this Sunday anyway. So you could have picnics two weekends in a
Sidney Crosby gets misplaced by ESPN
Sidney Crosby. Stanley Cup. Hometown parade. On his frickin’ birthday. Last Friday was awesome in Halifax, and with the Pittsburgh Penguins captain on display of course it attracted plenty of attention. Sports media giant ESPN did coverage under the headline “Sid gives Cup one big homecoming,” except as this screen grab shows, ESPN has the […]
Collector’s version of the Joel Plaskett cover
Soon after today’s 16th anniversary issue of the paper started hitting the street, we realized there’s something kinda amiss with the cover. While it probably won’t hit the Inverted Jenny level of fame, it’s a pretty inauspicious way to start our 17th year of publishing. We’re printing the right cover now, and will be delivering […]
Liz Feltham finally blows her deep cover
Restaurant reviewers like to be anonymous. It’s their thing. But even for a reviewer, Liz Feltham guarded her anonymity to legendary lengths. When Liz started writing for The Coast in 2001, little did I guess it would be eight years before I’d meet her face-to-face. I hired her as an untested reviewer based exclusively on […]
