The OC is a better record store than television show, breaking bands as viewership dies of boredom. The third Mix was a nine-song cash grab and the fourth was mediocre, but number five resurrects the series’ worth. LCD Soundsystem boasts through the clapalong “Daft Punk is Playing at My House,” Rogue Wave confounds with the perplexing lament “Publish My Love” and The Subways pay homage to their “Rock and Roll Queen.” Stars represent with “Your Ex-Lover is Dead” and Phantom Planet leaves a blight with an uncalled-for acoustic “California.” The closing, hypnotic “Hide and Seek” finds hipster soundtrack staple Imogen Heap pulling a Björk, accompanied by herself six times over. It’s poignant and subtle, both of which The OC left back in season one.
