Spielberg wanted out of the anthology film Twilight Zone after star Vic Morrow was decapitated filming John Landis’ segment. As a result, its “Kick the Can” remake became a contractual obligation and the worst thing Spielberg’s ever done. Yet it’s fascinating to see this misbegotten project—redeemed by George Miller’s terrific final episode—finally on DVD. Close Encounters, by contrast, is everything great they say it is. It’s been on disc before—but, comprising three different cuts, never in a version so definitive.
