Today, the Planning & Design Centre, with W.M. Fares Group, announced the three finalists for their international design competition, which will result in a new public art piece in front of a new South Park live/work development called the Trillium.
Thirty-seven submissions were received and judged by a pretty stellar jury, chaired by Frank Palermo (Architecture & Planning, Dalhousie University): Doug Bamford (artist), Peter Dykhuis (director/curator, Dalhousie Art Gallery), Sarah Fillmore (acting chief curator, AGNS), Andrew Terris (cultural researcher and consultant) and Roy Willwerth (architect, Duffus Romans Kundzins Rounsefel).
The three finalists are:
Alexander (Sandy) Graham (Dartmouth)
Lance Decker (Baltimore, Maryland)
Jonathan Leahey (Victoria, Australia)
Each finalist receives $1,000 to develop a stage-two submission. The stage-two winner will receive a $5,000 prize and the commission for installation of the piece, expected to be completed sometime in 2010. On May 26 the jurors will meet again and determine the winner, after which, there will be an exhibition of submissions that will run from May 30 to June 14, 2009.
