Understandably, the Parkas sound a bit tired on this—their third—release. The London, Ontario-based guitar-pop quartet almost broke up two years ago. The 2006 EP and documentary DVD A Life of Crime and the Scars to Prove It offered new music—following 2004’s Now This is Fighting—and a look into how a group almost loses it on a cross-Canada tour. (It did lose one of its founding members, guitarist Grady Kelnick.) Judging from music and lyrics, the wounds haven’t yet healed. The tunes are mostly atmospheric, down-tempo. The strident, tough rhythms and playing that made the first two albums so good are missing.
