The Damnsels
My Gender Role
(indie)
Moncton’s The Damnsels’ latest EP-release show coincided with their breakup show, which is a shame because in the unnecessarily male-dominated climate of the maritimes’ alternative music scene, we need more bands like this. A pop-punk trio made up of two girls and a guy, The Damnsels seem not to take themselves overly seriously and focus on having a good time, so it’s a fun 12 minutes. Though the sound isn’t so new, they’ve impressively mastered something that sounds like it walked straight out of a riot-grrrl-era garage and the questioning of persistent gender dichotomies on this record is, unfortunately, no less relevant than in theearly ’90s.
