When they’re not touring the country, crammed in a hatchback, The Crooked Brothers (Darwin Baker, Matt Foster and Jesse Matas) fancy themselves some time in the woods. The gritty country trio spent a few weeks last fall cooped up in a cabin on Manitoba’s Falcon Lake soaking up their surroundings, and recording their upcoming sophomore release Lawrence, Where’s Your Knife?. “Recording in November on a deserted lake really gives you the creative space that you seek while creating art. The sound of the cabin is very apparent,” says Matas, crediting cathedral ceilings, limited light and frigid temperatures for the resulting sounds. After spending a chunk of the spring in the woods again, building a log cabin, the fellas traded the trees for the Trans Canada and embarked on a 10 week tour to introduce the country to their upcoming release (due out September 23). And now it’s your turn for a taste, Halifax.
