Brothers who golf together, stay together

The Birthday Cakes are three brothers from Sudbury, Ontario who (sometimes) dress up in matching Adidas tracksuits and capes and perform songs about cake, Mike Tyson, Grandma and spiders. They are a riff-heavy band who shun verses and opt for catchy choruses intended to make you dance. They perform on Friday, July 11 at Gus’ Pub with Coyote MD, Versus (Truro) and Map to Temenos (St. John’s). “We’re super excited to come out east. I have never even seen the ocean before,” says Cameron “Magic” Drake. “Carter ‘Passion’ Drake and I will be basking in the glory of Halifax for the first time like it’s nobody’s business.” Cameron, Carter and Clayton “Science” Drake clearly have fun playing music together, and have no qualms about claiming they are “the greatest band in the world.” Outrageous promises are a bit of a band specialty. “We are actually the Jonas Brothers. Girls and women alike shrivel at our feet into a heap of estrogen and perfume,” says Cameron. Switching to a slightly more sincere note: “It’s just a lot of fun. We love doing what we do, and we hope other people will laugh with us.”
