Writer-director-star Ricky Gervais cleverly disguises a philosophical debate on religion by wrapping it in a breezy romcom with amazing star cameos. Mark Bellison (Gervais) is the first person to discover lying in a world where everyone tells the truth. The “little fat man” with the shit-eating grin is still a second-class citizen, competing for the love of confused Anna (Jennifer Garner) with a genetically perfect specimen, Brad (Rob Lowe, reprising his smarmy persona from Wayne’s World). In a Monty Python twist, Bellison becomes a modern-day prophet, giving birth to a religion that he disseminates to the world on pizza-box tablets. But it turns too cute in the final act, as theology gets pushed aside for a happy ending.

Ricky Gervais’s The Invention of Lying is the funniest movie I’ve seen after long time. There are many comedies that made me laugh out loud, but overall movie took place religion and after movie tuned to another aspect. Meditation, faith became subjects and it was really smart.
