Stereolab
Margerine Eclipse
(Elektra)
Though the death of member Mary Hansen left the band’s future in doubt, Stereolab has emerged from a dark period. Margerine Eclipse is one of group’s happiest and most melodic albums in years, filled with interesting quirks and bouncy basslines. Stereolab once had a reputation as innovators, but this doesn’t stray from their usual twisted ’60s French electro-pop. Even “Feel and Triple”—Hansen’s eulogy— is upbeat. But perhaps we should be grateful, considering the circumstances.
