“There’s the famous scene in Close Encounters of the Third Kind in which the humans, in an attempt to communicate with the extra-terrestrials using a combination of flashing coloured lights and single musical notes, try make contact or to communicate,” explains artist Ryan Suter. “This form of communication seems pre-lingual, and we have found this interesting.”
But that’s only the beginning.
Suter and project partner Adriana Kuiper present Night Tweeter, which encapsulates so much about modern communication precisely by saying so little. It’s a play on words that needs no words at all.
“A tent attempts to communicate through flashing Morse code lights, reflecting on or retelling conversations or thoughts that may have occurred in that space. It mocks the quick flash of words,” he says. “We’re playing with the Citadel as a signalling station. We’ve always been fascinated by the Citadel as a space in the city. It’s in the centre of town but definitely peripheral in how it functions. Maybe Night Tweeter highlights a sense of loneliness or longing as the tent is isolated. Night Tweeter becomes an alternative beacon, a silent town crier or a storyteller.”
