Apparently a lot of you think I’m wrong to care that Queen Elizabeth will be in Halifax June 28-30, during the navy’s centennial. Yes, I know the Monarch is irrelevant to Canada and its government, but so are your arguments. This woman is one of the most consistent pop culture icons of our lifetime. Well before Justin Bieber’s garbage was being ransacked by TMZ, Liz had to deal with British gossip media ragging on her hats. Just last week she was in the news for giggling at a guard (amazing photos) and because a BBC host announced she was dead (she’s not). Yes, she’s done some not-so great things, but whose grandmother hasn’t? (Prince Philip is another story though.)

I for one will work on my curtsy, and hunt down an appropriate hat. Cheerio, haters!

  1. Ahh yes, let’s ignore how irrelevant she is to the country and the “not-so great things” because she’s a pop culture icon. Brilliant, flawless reasoning right there.

So I have to pay taxes so you can have a “pop culture icon”, which she isn’t.

I like Weird Al, how about you pony up some coin to have him come visit?

  3. As well ” for one will work on my curtsy”

    Why?

We make fun of rock stars that have “Don’t look Mr. Diamond in the eyes”, but this is acceptable.

The British ideals of classes and “betters” makes me sick.

How about this? All homeless people must bow as I pass them.

    Makes as much sense.

  4. Actually the Queen isn’t irrelevant to our System of Government.
As the Head of state, she has the ability to still use her Executive powers. Having an apolitical H o S is IMO better than say a system with a President & a Prime minister. A President would be obliged to the people/Party he belonged to, with a monarch that problem is eliminated. Because all Laws passed in the Country, have to be ok’ed by the H o S, this means a majority elected Government can’t just go and change laws to suit them, If for example a majority Government tried to make a law that all woman must wear burka’s to go outside . She would be within her mandate to strike down that law. The fact we have a H o S, that guarantees a continuous stable governance & a nonpartisan safeguard against abuse of power by the Prime Minister & Party.

The real problem IMO with our Political system…is the fact the Senate (upper house) isn’t elected. That is a much bigger problem than having The Queen as our Head of State.

  5. Why do we bow to these ‘Royals’. As far as I am concerned they are as disfunctional as anyone else, just a whole lot richer.

  6. “The fact we have a H o S, that guarantees a continuous stable governance & a nonpartisan safeguard against abuse of power by the Prime Minister & Party.”

    Bullshit

    One word “Prorogue”

    Yeah, great system there Lou

  7. Arguing over the fact whether the Queen is required for our form of government is pointless. Yes, she’s our head of state. Technically speaking, she’s the last word in all of our laws. But realistically, it would never happen. Get over it.

Fact is, she is an icon of the world. She’s the figurehead of one of the world’s long standing countries/empires. Like it or not, she’s a historical figure.
