Sell Control for Life’s Speed

Pilate’s debut was a lovely, melodic slice of Britpop cut against the ’70s-infused scrap rock popular in 2003. On Sell Control for Life’s Speed the Toronto quartet takes a bite out of the Coldplay apple with big, bombastic, arena-ready songs. The best example is the nearly nine-minute “Don’t Stare,” which finds singer Todd Clark staggering through the wilderness trying to find his heart (or maybe god—vaguely Biblical lyrics abound, still). Backed by a lush wall of guitars and a judicious use of dramatic pauses, this sophomore effort signifies a band willing to push itself without abandoning its core sound. Selling control, maybe, but not selling out.
