The new Spatz theatre at Citadel High was packed for the two-day-only run of the nautical musical Out of Lunenberg. The show is a new work written by Jim Bennet, and it’s filled with a nice mix of his trademark playful, jaunty songs and some lovely, tender ballads. Set in 1925, one half of the story follows a group of fisherman (including a 12-year old newbie, an untried young captain and other assorted salty characters) as they weather the dangerous seas. The other half deals with the lives of the women, children and other towns folk who wait and watch for the fishermen’s return. Though the show was slightly marred by problems with the microphones, the production itself was tight and immensely entertaining. Don’t worry if you missed it this time round, Out of Lunenberg seems like the kind of show that will light up Atlantic Canadian stages in the future.

This has GOT to go to Lunenburg! It could be the Anne of Green Gables production of Nova Scotia!
