Ocote Soul Sounds and Adrian Quesada
El Niño y el Sol
(Aire Sol Records)
Calling himself Ocote Soul Sounds, Martin Perna of Brooklyn-based Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra and Adrian Quesada, founder of Austin, Texas, band Grupo Fantasma, have created a soundtrack to a film that doesn’t exist. Imagine a long road trip in an old car, heading south and seemingly always into the setting sun. Lots of revelation and self-discovery, some hijinx, with plenty of stops and unforgettable encounters. El Niño y El Sol is comprised of 13 musical vignettes—more score than soundtrack—all Afro-Latin based rhythms, with some hip-hop and soul influences. Flute, sax, ambient sounds—this disc brings it all along.
