Take a tour around the world in Place Markers: Mapping Locations and Probing Boundaries. The exhibit features various artists using a wonderful mix of mediums to convey the evolution of mapping technology within the global landscape. Technology is prominently featured alongside traditional art methods to invoke a sense of wonder and mystery. Artists successfully capture the spirit of their geographic area while putting a new twist on cartography. Feel the warmth of Melbourne from James Geurts’ light installation in “Tidal Continuum #10,” which features warm, florescent lights hanging from the wall. Ron Benner recreates life in rural Ontario in “WH…? What will you be in eternity?” with beautiful black and white photography and commercial hybrid corn seed strewn on the ground. In “4816,” Evamaria Trischak carefully maps out Vienna, Austria. Users can locate different sections of Vienna through a computerized map, which displays five pictures captured at each intersection in a one-minute time span. If only finding a car in a full parking lot were this simple.
