On the surface, We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things seems to follow the path laid out by the title: a tired idiom mildly rejuvenated with oddball relish. Mraz’s beach-guitar formula is filled with familiar hooks, making the album both cliche and catchy. But as We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things plays on, Mraz’s personality begins to show as he cracks smutty turns of phrase, references weed smoking and rocks a horn section that recalls ’80s soul. Unfortunately, Mraz’s music remains too firmly in the realm of generic pop to fully realize his potential as a significant musician.
