If you want to discover the next generation of painting art-stars, now’s your chance. Jack Bishop‘s paintings of grocery-store crowds and mall food courts would strike dread into the heart of those who hate consumer experiences-—except for the fact that they’re so damn gorgeous. Employing strange angles, warm colours and thick, muscular lines of paint, he turns scenes of Bayers Lake parking lots and rotary traffic jams into incredible landscapes. His new show, Personnel to the Sales Floor for Customer Service, Please, opens Friday, March 28, 6pm, at Gallery Page and Strange (1869 Granville). In one painting, “Variety Pack,” tiny, faceless fuchsia people orderly march with their carts through corals, then get lost in a sea of other panicked shoppers, turned every which way. Amazing stuff.
