It’s tough being an artist. All that criticism, all that intense staring. Eyelevel Gallery’s first installment in their five week series of members’ shows gently reminds the viewer to be nice. Called go easy on me, the inaugural Eyelevel Members’ Weekly show includes “art about diaries, self-portraiture and feelings” and runs until July 23. The Members’ Weekly shows will run until August 20 and feature 38 projects by 42 artists. Organized by Lisa Folkerson, this week artists Vida Beyer, Emily Davidson and Susan Wolf, Zachary Gough, Carey Jernigan, Kathryn Johnson, Maddy Mathews, Danika Vandersteen and Jon Welland will exhibit their work.
Folkerson says the show features “a diverse range of artists with very different artistic practices; the show encompasses painting, drawing, sculpture, performance, survey and chocolate.”
RECORD SCRATCH. As a lady, I can attest to how frequently ladies be trippin’ over chocolate. Carey Jernigan’s piece—titled Happiness Chocolate—features an artist residence in the gallery to Saturday (12-1pm). “In the pursuit of happiness, I started to make chocolates,” says Jernigan. “And when I learned about a plant that also makes people happy, I added it to the mix.” Now we let much conjecture fly as to what the plant in question is.
Don’t skimp on the preening, as Jernigan intends to “record the facial expressions of visitors to the gallery who agree to try them.” Jernigan intends on compiling the photos in a blog and maybe a book. So look nice.
