In celebration of Halifax Pop Explosion, which starts next Tuesday, give us your favourite all-time Halifax song. What is the best track to come out of the city? Is it Buck 65’s “Wicked & Weird”? Sloan’s “Underwhelmed”? Piggy’s “Homeless Song”? Dog Day’s “Lydia”? C’mon, we know you have an opinion…
Give us your favourites in the comments, and may the debates begin! The results of our very unscientific poll will be published in next week’s issue.
This article appears in Oct 15-21, 2009.

Barrett’s Privateers. Hands down.
Paul Lamb & Cory Tetford – Crush’s “Live”.
Barrett’s Privateers. I listen to it whenever I am homesick…which has been twice a day so far, every day.
Please Don’t Please Me – The Danger Bees
Barrett’s Privateers…..then Love This Town…..then The Maritimes
Joel Plaskett’s – Love This Town
Farewell to Nova Scotia sounds much less annoying when you are in Australia and miss Halifax.
And yes, Love this Town as well.. or Marquee and the Moon by Sloan.
The Inbreds – Yelverton Hill, a close second would be Sloan’s I Am The Cancer.
“Been Waiting” by The Flashing Lights
Definitely Love this town by Joel Plaskett
WTF!!! SLOAN!!! HELLO! Is everyone gone mad!?! Any song by Sloan beats these songs outright!! Youtube Coax ME and muster some real Bluenoser pride. Pretty bad a Newf has to be the one with taste 🙂
scribbler – ocean floor
Love This Town – Joel Plaskett, hands down.
🙂
Anything by Sarah Mclachlan especially Vox
I know it’s been a while since she’s actually lived here, but Sloan hasn’t lived here since becoming successful either.
I think Plaskett’s Love This town works for bands that actually still live here.
Cocaine Cowgirl by Matt Mays & El Torpedo
Love This Town by Joel Plaskett
City Of Lakes by Matt Mays & El Torpedo
Barrett’s Privateers by Stan Rogers
Nowhere With You by Joel Plaskett
Down at the Khyber.
It’s both hilarious and deserving that Joel Plaskett’s face is what draws people to this poll.
Love this Town by Joel Plaskett, by a landslide.
A Man on Pier 21 – Black Pool
I agree, anything from Vox by Sarah M. It was a long time ago but she is by far the biggest success story in my memory of musicians from around here, and it was released while she was living here.
Oh, please stop with the Plaskett love….he’s really not that talented.
I vote for Dreamer by Jenn Grant.
Heebie Jeebie – Bubaiskull
Maritimes by classified… all the way! Or if you’re oceans away and missin the Alehouse jam out to the Rankin Family’s Feel the Same Way Too!
What about “Hello City” by the Barenaked Ladies? I bet that’s Kay’s favourite song.
“Hello city, you’ve found an enemy in me” – sounds like Kay alright!
Yes, I am making Kay’s infamy spread even beyond LTWWB.
I agree that Joel Plaskett is pretty over-rated. He sounds like just about every other indie folk singer in the world. Apparently disliking him makes you “un-Haligonian” or something like that though.
JillStreet, I preferred the “Wankin Family” to be honest. Yep, they were a real band alright – punk rock. Used to play at Cafe Ole back in the mid 90s. Good times!
Yes, I admit that I am just trying to be cool by mentioning this.
Down at the Kyhber – JP
City of Lakes – Matt Mays
The Superfriendz
Sloan – Coax Me
El Camino – Heelwalkers
Sloan – Underwhelmed. It’s one of my favorite songs in general.
Gottingen Street – Spirit of the West
Barrett’s Privateers – Stan Rogers
i think it has to be Barrett’s Privateers…its the one Halifax-themed song you can’t imagine living without
I always thought he was singing about Sherbrooke PQ until I found out theres a Sherbrooke in NS.
Orphan Baby by Phollop Willing PA. First known ‘indie’ single 1980
Ummm…what about MC J & Cool G, or at least something by the goods? I confess though, my vote is the same as the popular vote….gotta give it up for Joel. Though my preference would be waiting to be discovered or even North Dakota from thrush hermit days.
