Although there are still a couple of days left, I feel pretty secure in saying that I’ve seen my favourite show of this year’s fringe, So…What About Love?. While not perfect, it’s a damn fine example of a work that touches both the heart and the funny bone. The actors poke fun at the play’s ultra-fast trajectory from conception to production (discussed in Alison Lang’s story “Fringers get so lucky in love”) in the opening number, comparing the uncertainty of theatre with the uncertainty of love. Throughout the play all three actors (Andrew Chandler, Amy Reitsma and Garry Williams) explore different types of love, and the different consequence of giving or withholding love. Sometimes they are part of a scene, other times they address, instruct or plead with the audience. The show is laced together with a dozen original songs, from show tunes to ballads. So…what About Love? is a shining example of the way the fringe festivals makes amazing theatre accessible to everyone.
