Run The Jewels, the latest album from the creative team of Killer Mike, who will be performing at this year’s Halifax Pop Explosion and El-P (who was here for last year’s Pop Ex), is a fantastic mix of head-knocking bass-heavy beats and critical, articulate lyrics. While there is the ubiquitous self aggrandizement found in most contemporary rap, El-P’s delicious oily beats and Killer Mike’s acerbic assertions of industry dominance will leave you noddin’ and wondering why people are discussing Jay Z’s Magna Carta and Kanye’s Yeezus, when they should just be running the jewels.
