An asymmetrical movie from David Cronenberg and starring Twilight‘s Robert Pattinson, Cosmopolis should be the movie you see next. Adapted from the 2003 Don DeLillo novel, Cosmopolis finds a young business tycoon’s cross-town trip for a haircut interrupted by presidential visits, sex, Occupy-esque riots, sex, madness over a devaluing yen and a potential assassin. Playing said tycoon, Pattinson braves the obstacles in his luxurious limo while debating ideas such as whether life is too contemporary, or if money has lost its narrative. It could all quickly get self-indulgent, but Cronenberg is masterful here. His screenplay wisely keeps much of DeLillo’s jazzy prose, which pushes financial jargon into the realm of poetry. Pattinson too delivers an inhuman performance, as cold and sharp as porcelain. This is a symposium on the spectre of capitalism, so bring a friend. You’re going to want to talk about it afterwards.
