  1. I have a pretty excellent graphic that I made last year when I was covering the column of Macca raising his goblet of rock and saying “Suck it, Halifax!” in a comic book bubble.

Let me know if you’d like me to email it to you just in case.

  2. Song? The whole album was awesome! The album with Wings before that was good too. Paul has been getting worse and worse ever since Band on the Run. It seems the richer he gets, the duller he gets. If I were him, I’d give all my money to Smee. Then I (Paul) would be rich in music again. Anyway, Wings has lost Linda, it won’t be the same ‘ol Wings. Paul is the master of cute ditties, a Ditty Deity!

  3. would it be possible to get a big concert starring someone from this Century?? when Halifax contacts the promoters, do they have a clause “…give us someone old, irrelevant, and hitless for decades, ie Rolling Stones,Celine, Kiss, McCartney etc….”

  4. Smee, did you say Wings has lost Linda??
Nooooooo!!!! She Was the Talented One!!!!!

  5. Madonna is the only reason I would ever stand outside for 10 hours, probably in the rain, probably with a guy peeing on my leg.

  6. Hey FixednBroken: the only clause in any concert for the Commons or Magnetic Hill is “give us acts that are capable of filling an area that fits anywhere between 40,000 to 80,000 people” Unfortunately not too many (if any) acts in recent history are capable of this.

  7. Ok FixednBroken you can whine and sit home with your thumb up your ass while all of us plus tens of thousands others enjoy this and many other concerts this summer..time to grow up dude and lose the arrogance…..(dalemxx)

  8. Hey, McCartney’s a living legend, so give him some respect will ya. I’d like to see any of you naysayers achieve even a quarter of what he has – doubt it! Oh, and his last few albums were good, though I doubt that those who say they’re not have even listened.

  9. Excellent for Halifax. Events wake us up and when there’s none we all complain, hilarious that people love whining about living legends and major events because their ultimate frisbee game gets interrupted ahahaha GOOOOFS

  11. I twittered this on May 2 as a “fairly reliable rumour.” At the time, I was talking with someone who was arranging staging for the show. I can only imagine the delay in an official announcement has to do with dickering over contracts. That is, moolah. Yours, to be precise.

  12. Why don’t I hear all the bitching about the sacred, not-to-actually-be-used-except-by-the-livers-by Commons that I heard when the Stones came?

  13. oh great, our PUBLIC land, the commons, will be torn apart AGAIN – for weeks prior to and after the event – until the city finally gets around to removing the fences & barricades AND repairing the horrific damage that’s done to the grounds by all the large transport trucks, vehicles and other heavy equipment, plus the massive crowds of concert goers (that don’t even live here) who leave their piles of garbage behind and strewn about the grounds. meanwhile… the neighbourhood and the rest of us who enjoy using the commons for its *intended* recreational purposes or just to hang-out there, will just have to suck it up, while a private-for-profit enterprise commandeers OUR public land for several weeks.

look, these BIG outdoor concerts are a great idea… but NOT on the halifax common!

and don’t even get me started on that ridiculous ‘commons carpet’ – what a friggin waste of tax payer money that was! what did that thing cost us anyway… something like $150,000 or more?? only to get stuck in the damn mud and then destroyed (cut up into pieces), just so it could be hauled out of the dirt.

gheesh, and i thought i was bad with money!

  14. btw, the essential thing to keep in-mind is this… IF we allow public land – which has been designated for ‘common’ use – to be arbitrarily taken-over by *private* interests – then, we’re eventually gonna LOSE it.

i mean let’s face it, we KNOW there’ll be even more enterprising profiteers come along, wanting to claim their financial stake in what is essentially a very valuable piece of real estate – which they get to use for almost nothing – while access to the public, aka ‘the common’ or the community, slowly, but most assuredly, becomes eroded.

it’s called the halifax ‘common’ for a reason… think about it

  15. Re: techcafe’s post.

Check out HRM’s federal infastructure priorities –
Commons Concert Venue Infrastructure 1,750.000 2+ years
    Commons sports facilities – $0

The Stones concert was based on the decrepit state of the Commons. i.e. it couldn’t do it much more harm. We now know where HRM’s priorities are.

Both the Stones and Urbane concerts put a good portion of the commons out of commission for the rest of the year. The Urbane concert “carpet” was toast. Might we need two of them this year?

Put us out of our misery. Pave the commons over. Milk us whining peninsula taxpayers for ever cent you can and forget any notion that the commons are a sports facility.

After all, us peninsular types shouldn’t have the nerve to expect any services for our tax dollars.

  16. @asarum

yeah, you’re right, the city is prioritizing commercial (private) events over publicly-funded sport & recreation… and it’s pretty g’damn sad.

i do get the feeling that there are certain members of the ‘business community’ (is that an oxymoron?) that are rather eager to exploit the Halifax Common for their own self-serving interests. no doubt, they have ‘plans’ for the Common (or what’s left of it) and the groundwork for its future ‘development’ is already in the works.

the commercial exploitation of our (beloved?) Common is well underway.

btw, is it just me, or has anyone else noticed a rather conspicuous neglect of the Common over the past few years?

and what’s with the strips of ugly, and very poorly laid, black asphalt? cheap-ass road pavement is not really suitable for an urban park / sports & rec field. then again… maybe that’s the point. the city’s priorities – the ‘plan’ for the Common – is devolving to the capricious business types and various other commercial / private interests / leeches.

do we really need the $$$ that bad? maybe so…

    meh fuckit, you’re right, asarum…
let’s just pave paradise and put up more parking lots!

    $$$CHA-CHING$$$

ps – look, can we all agree on this much at least… that the Conservatives (and Rodney MacDonald) HAVE TO GO. PLEASE, let’s vote those asshats out of power, once and for all. since we’re so damn good at voting political parties ‘out-of-power’, instead of electing one to actually *represent* us. Liberal/NDP, i don’t give a shit one way or the other… just get rid of the Conservatives (and RM too… lord almighty, how’d we end-up with a ‘gym teacher’ as our Premier??).

  17. ^ Just becuase the event doesn’t happen to sync up with your personal interests, doesn’t mean we should all adhere to them. There are thousands upon thousands of people in this city who would rather see Paul play than bitch and moan about GRASS AND DIRT that can be replaced. He is the most successful musician in our time (helluva lot better than Lennon, solo and Beatles, though I love Lennon), despite having peaked in the 60’s he is still one of the biggest musical influences of today. You can’t blame people for wanting the chance to witness the music in person. And then we have people like you who’d rather throw that away so they can moan about their sports. You can play sports anywhere. Where else in Halifax in McCartney going to play if not the commons? I’d like to see you cram 50 000 people comfortably anywhere else in this city. Its moshing time, and you can screw off D= Sorry but your vote is the minority. Suck it~

And, this isn’t just about McCartney, but all the great bands that have and will come to play there. You’d rather people miss out on every single one of those events so you can comfortable frolic in the commons when you feel like it. (Which you can still do, so I don’t know why the flack is present)

  18. I don’t get many of the people posting here. Can’t you do math. How much provincial sales tax is taken in for this concert? say 50,000 tickets (very conservative) at 125.00 (let alone the 300.00 vip)multiply by 8%, that tax revenue for sales is 500,000. Add this to the increased sales to all businesses in the city, considering all hotels are booked, and there are city surcharges etc. etc. this is a cash cow for the city, province and merchants. The commons gets repaired, with money to spare. On top of this an artist, who is the worlds biggest selling recording artist of all time. This is a total winner. This has absolutely nothing to do with the party in power. I commend all who are bringing this caliber of performance and revenue to the area.
