Every set of eyes sees a city differently: it’s shortcuts, friendly faces, run-down buildings and new additions. A street that’s an eyesore to some, could be a gem to others. In efforts to welcome new artists into the gallery, Swoon’s Brandt Eisner put out an open call for the juried show City Seen, which brought forth photography, paintings, sculpture, textiles and more. “People just love cityscapes, and it’s a theme that can be taken very literal, or more of a fantasy,” he says, citing NSCAD student Natalia Kalafut’s weaving and Nancy Roberts’ Shaw brick sculptures as more abstract, whimsical takes on the theme. Familiar Halifax street scenes and graffitied walls that could be anywhere, grace the gallery’s walls, along with works from 19 artists, inviting you to see the city from a different point of view.
