When it comes to the success or failure of a Blue Rodeo album, it all comes down, arguably, to Greg Keelor. When he’s sounding all down on his luck, so does the band. That’s what happened on the group’s last outing, Are You Ready? But Keelor’s up and at it on the new one, Small Miracles. Even when he’s singing lines like “I don’t have all the time in the world,” from the opening “So Far Away,” there’s a sense of acceptance and commitment in his delivery. “Black Ribbon” is another fine tune by Keelor/Cuddy. All this is not to say Cuddy and the rest of the band don’t matter. Cuddy and company are steady on: Keelor holds the key.
