There’s no getting around the voice. Nina Persson makes her mark on
A Camp and the trio’s second album, Colonia, which follows up the first
and self-titled release from 2001—a welcome return! The Swedish
Persson’s inflections and intonations continue to give her voice that
special character: a sophisticated and elegant sheen or surface
shrouding the wasted and desperate core. With Niclas Frisk on guitar
and keyboards, Nathan Larson on bass, joined by various guests,
including James Iha, the music hangs back, moody and understated; the
perfect foundation for Persson’s performances, especially “Bear on the
Beach,” “My America” and “It’s Not Easy to Be Human.”
