- The talented teens of 13
In 13, Lachlan Topshee plays Evan, a big-city boy trying to fit into a painfully-small small town after his parents divorce. Evan is drawn to the outcasts Patrice (Nika Gantar) and Archie (Evan Matthews), but realizes his popularity is dependent on winning over the junior high school alpha-male Brett (Ben Stephenson). Pre-teen angst ensues. While a show that’s equal parts The Ugly Duckling and High School Musical is not the most original story you’ll ever see, its bouncy, catchy score and exuberant performances by Neptune Theatre’s Youth Performance Company make it great fun. It’s almost scary how well these teens can sing…and dance…and act. The performances managed to seem both poised and unforced, and there’s a wealth of brilliant comic timing on stage, especially from Chad Hendrickson and Spencer Laing as Eddie and Malcolm, Brett’s hilarious henchmen. There’s no set to speak of, but the lighting, choreography and live band are all first rate. Don’t miss this great opportunity to check out Halifax’s future theatre stars.
