Every morning I drink my coffee and read the Chronicle Hearld. Lately I have been noticing full page ads trying to encourage Canadians to prevent Verizon from coming in to our market. Apparently they are going to steal our “jobs” and ignore the “rural areas”. BLOW IT OUT YOUR ASSES Rogers, Bell and Telus. So now you care about what’s best for Canadians? BULL SHIT. Jobs shmobs. All you care about is your bottom line and screwing the rest of us in ours. AND now you insult our intelligence by acting like you’re just trying to protect us from the big bad Verizon.
I hope Verizon does to you all, what you have been doing to us, and I hope they leave the lube out too! —Tired of being FUTA by Cell Companies

Yeah, plus they won’t let us get skype numbers. I’m with you OP.
Be careful what you wish for. The grass isn’t always greener. At the end of the day, it’s still grass! My thoughts are that the US will only undercut their rates for so long, then we’re back to where we are now. And the reality of this is, if we all support US programs, THEY have the control. The US wants to control everything. We need to stand up to our own Government and demand that they implement a plan to reduce communication costs for everyone. Not an easy task I know, but I’d rather keep it Canadian, sorry.
The more competition the better, we are, supposedly, the most gouged of the G8 countries when it comes to mobile and internet charges. The usual cries from the Big 3 are protectionism at its finest, go screw yourself, bring in anyone, US, Chinese, Egyptian, Darkside – same goes for the airlines.
Verizon is luxury carrier in the states, so don’t kid yourselves: the rates won’t be much different.
Well it IS much harder to provide coverage in Canada ya fools. We’ve got a butt load of land to cover and a population that is spread out like a thin film of pond scum. Its much more expensive (lets say dollars per square kilometer) to set up cell grids in Canada because there’s (on average) far less people per square kilometer than the US or UK or other european countries. Less people in each cell to gouge = charge more per person
But I agree – they’re all a bunch of money hungry fools
fool: The opposite of your theory is true. Lets use Russia as an example as they have a butt load of land and their population is also spread out like a thin film of pond scum. They had let all foreign companies compete with each other for customers. What happened? More coverage on average then Canada (including rural and remote areas) and their rates are far, far less then what we pay.
So competition is a very good thing. Now what do you say about people playing the Fool?
Yeah exactly. Let foreign companies in and drive prices down, right? I never said otherwise, foreign investors have more cost security because they have more places to ‘draw’ money from. I was just stating one of the main reasons why OUR costs are so high. We’ve no foreign competition, and it’s logistically difficult because of population and space(compared to other developed countries)
And how is the Russian cell service anyway? They’re actually a bit different than us as far as population spread because they have more and denser population centers and vast expanses of the country that are almost completely uninhabited. Which Canada has certainly, but Russia has to a greater degree
All I know is that on Bell/Aliant, at my parent’s house on the very bottom of the south shore, we have to go upstairs into the front room and stand on a chair and wave the phone overhead to get a bar to send a text or make a call. I can’t see how Verizon will make any of this any worse for our rural areas…
Russia – population 144,000,000
Canada – population 34,000,000
Their pond scum is a lot thicker than ours.
^^^ But the Russians have that Badass Bastard Putin running the show, don’t do as he says at it’s Spetsnaz time motherfucker.
Russia – 17,098,246 sq kilometers
Canada – 9,984,670 sq kilometers
Just a bit bigger in area than us as well Bro Tim
Absolutely agree. My cell phone was stolen in the USA last week. Today i went to BELL ALIANT (motherfucking assrammers..) to ask for help. At first i was told that they would replace the device (since i’ve only had it since january) but then, after looking at my account, decided against it since i signed my contract during some vague “promotional period” and was unable to get a new device.
I just sort of stared at the guy for a second and said “so….. what you’re saying is that i have to keep paying a bill for a service i can no longer use?” and he said “Well…. no…. You can buy a new device outright!”
I said “So in other words then.. I can shell out seven hundred bucks to replace the phone my contract guaranteed was protected against theft so i can continue to pay for the privilege of paying through the nose to you guys?”
He says “Well you can go on kijiji and buy a used device and we can hook that up for you!”
I said “Sooo… in other words, fuck me and the horse i rode in on?”
And he just looks sheepishly at me and is all like “Sorry…”
I cancelled my account today. Fuck bell.
And let’s just keep in mind.. that the entire time i had this account, i NEVER was able to use the phone without incurring random, mysterious and arbitrary charges.
I am careful with money and with my phone use. I was stymied as to how these mystery charges kept showing up. I was also falsely informed about what was included in my account when i signed up. I was told i had theft insurance (which i didn’t) I was told i had international texting and local texting (I had neither and my first bill was over 300 bucks because i used my texts as the agent said i could) and i was told i had voicemail and caller ID (which i didn’t – and ended up being charged extra for using them – when nobody asked me if i wanted them. He basically added on an extra package without asking me or warning me that it would increase my monthly contract amount)
To reiterate. This is BELL ALIANT.
