I’m a 31-year-old single man who went out with this nice girl for almost three months. I was into her until I found out she was nearly 50K in the hole from student loans to pay for her university business degree. She graduated in 2014 and now only makes about 35K and making the minimum monthly payments. To me, a woman with that much debt needs to be avoided like the plague. I have a buddy who has a girlfriend with a bunch of student loan debt and she convinced him to help her pay them off! I’m not doing that; I expect a woman to pay her own way in every aspect in life. This girl I recently ended it with might not have done that, but how is she ever going to afford what I can afford when she’s debilitated with these payments for the next 8-10 years? I make nearly 40K and I don’t have any student loan debt because after high school, I just continued to work at a restaurant chain and now I’m a general manager! I’m frankly sick of these entitled college/uni chicks who were dumb enough to get into all of this debt (instead of just doing high school and trying to move up in the place they were working at during HS, like I did) and working jobs that don’t even pay that much expecting any man withOUT that debt to be a puddle at their feet, just because THEY got a degree! –No debt for me

Totally agree (my GF is great with money so not an issue with me btw). We just saw millions of woman and completely cucked men marching for equality (which they have btw). It is funny how so many woman still bring nothing to the table in a relationship and expect a man to pay their way, and then complain about inequality.

… so she just graduated in 2014 and you are bitching she is making a starter type pay rate at a company. Well, how much were you making 3 years after HS??? If she has been at the same place for three years maybe she is NOW working her way up. You are only 5k ahead with no education. She could easily be out earning you in a few years then once her loans are paid she will be much better off.
It is true that debt seems high for a 4 year degree, but she didn’t ask you for any help so why would you assume that is coming? Maybe 5% of the girls I know with student loans suckered a guy into paying them, most people take it as a point of pride to pay it themselves or just have more self respect/ consideration for others.
If you don’t like her much then don’t date her, fine, but if this is your sole reason for dumping her then you are a dumb ass.

This might be one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read. What if this woman was in debt because she bought a house, a car, or something else? Would her debt be okay then?
Life is a series of choices; some require you to make short-term sacrifices for long term gain. A higher education doesn’t always work out, but that’s a risk people take. Depending on her field and how ambitious she is, she could be making double the salary in 8-10 years. Eventually, she’ll pay this off and then she might take on another debt load (remodeling, buying a new vehicle, purchasing a condo, etc.). All of those choices would be looked on favourably in the dating sphere as it’s a sign that she’s doing well and has her shit together (although that doesn’t matter, as long as she’s happy it’s nobody’s fucking business). Either way, none of this happens overnight.
This is beside the point though, because her being in debt is clearly not really the issue here. After all, she didn’t bring up asking for financial assistance from you. She’ll pay this off and move on, most likely to bigger and better things. You’ll be stuck in your job with minimal pay increases and limited mobility and your life will look exactly the same in 10 years as it looks today. In order for you to make any big purchase or invest in yourself you’ll either kill yourself working to save the money for it over time or you’ll have to go in debt to do it. Get off your high horse and have some respect. You made your choices and you are happy with them. She made hers and, if you were a decent person, you’d hope she was happy as well. Also, perhaps reconsidering making sweeping generalizations about 50% of the population based on a handful of interactions with an infinitesimal portion of said population. You wouldn’t respond well if I said all men are deadbeats just because I dated one or two, so don’t do the same to women just because you’ve encountered a few jerks along the way.

I went to university and got student loans. I pay all my own bills every month and have never asked a man for help… but because I’m educated and happen to have some student debt, I’m unworthy to date your uneducated ass? How much were you making right out of high school? This chick, as mentioned is only making 5k less than you and she’s pretty much a new grad. So yeah, she’s probably going to out-earn you very soon, because with a university degree, the top earning potential tends to be much higher than a high school grad.
You sound insecure, OB. I mean if you lost your job tomorrow, and it was a choice between hiring you or someone who is actually educated, who do you think they’d hire? I know a few people who were making 40k (which, in the grand scheme of things, isn’t really all that much) with no education and lost their jobs and couldn’t even find a pot to piss in, let alone a job making about minimum wage. Count yourself lucky.
Also, some of us educated folks went to school to do something that would provide some intrinsic enjoyment and enrich our lives (to, you know, have a career, and not just a job). I’d much rather have some student debt and have a job I enjoy going to every day, than do a job I’d hate, and for me, working in a restaurant (even as a general manager), would be misery. Kudos to you for being happy with your job and your relatively low top earning potential, but some of us want more out of life.

I came out of school with $100000 in loans that I take care of myself, but that EDUCATION has allowed me to go from 65000 yearly to 100000 in 4 years with potential for growth. My partner and I have been living together for a while; we don’t know what the other earns, spends, invests in or owes. Living expenses are shared evenly. We signed a co-hab agreement so we are each protected.

Average Full Time wages in Canada are just under 50K, so I’m not sure why you’re bragging about your below average salary when this new graduate is making almost as much as you are.
