To all the spoiled coffee shop workers talking about unionizing,
You need a serious dose of reality. I take offense to your complaints over trivial matters. You have the nerve to complain about your “working conditions” when most of us have to deal with ten times more shit than you do on a daily basis. Here’s a taste of it; We can’t take breaks when we want to. Sometimes the work demands long hours – often without compensation – to meet deadlines. Our meetings can go on forever, regardless of how bad we want to smoke/sleep/party. We deal with big projects, clients and deadlines. Some of us have to sacrifice our well being, once in a while, to get shit done. We have a lot of responsibilities and professional expectations to uphold. But that’s just how it is, and we deal with it.
If you think your “working conditions” are so terrible working in a coffee shop, you’re going to shit yourself in any other environment. I wish I could see your face the moment you’re told to stay up all night to meet a deadline and present the next day.

All true. But they should still be allowed to unionize if they choose to do so. The fuck do you care, meeting boy?
And there are LOTS of other employers who treat their employees respectfully; respect limits and boundaries; pay well, etc.
OB just has a bad boss, that’s all kids. Pay him no mind…
With Meaty on this one, your willingness to sacrifice to get ahead in your profession is commendable but also your choice. Not all want to put work ahead of their life. Not saying that one way is better than the other but “just saying”.
Uncle G, I don’t know what the G stood for but I know it wasn’t good.
Not a slap at you OP, I just wanted to say it. First I thought of when I read your handle.
Agree with all the above posts, especially spurious. It’s hard to imagine calling someone who makes minimum wage spoiled…regardless of your opinion on the matter, OP, it is every Canadian’s right to form a union, if they have the support of the MAJORITY of their co-workers.
You have it harder so that means they have no right to complain? Oh, fuck off.
Contrary to popular belief a union will NOT make your job better; will most likely leave you with less of a pay cheque, not more (union dues from every pay); will only help you with work “issues” as far as their bottom line or media whoring will allow. What unions definitely do is make it impossible for small privately owned businesses to operate… minimum wage employees who join a union will most likely end up UNEMPLOYED once the business goes under from trying to pay union wages. Good luck union brain-washed morons.

Actually it is a legal right.

I agree that small business’ aren’t the best place to try forming a union, though.
i would never join a union, you really don’t want me as a member
I don’t work in a union at present. I have in the past, though. There were positives and negatives. It’s the principle of being able to form a union, giving more power to the worker as opposed to the owner or management, that I agree with.
i only have two employees
Yeah, in that case a union would be pretty pointless. In my opinion unions only really serve their purpose when applied to larger entities. It’s a heavily divided topic, half of people seem to hate the idea of unions and half seem to be in favor. I’m in favor of empowering employees to have some input into their working conditions/future/payscale/etc. A union is the best (and maybe the only) way to accomplish that. I believe that if it were left entirely up to the CEO of a giant company (no labor laws, etc) there would be no such thing as a minimum wage.
However, like I said, this is my opinion. I’m sure there will be plenty to disagree with it.
Poor Uncle G, he sits in a comfy chair at a meeting for hours. That sounds terrible!
Try doing physical labour, I roll around on the floor all day in dirt, grease and oil. Back and knees aching. All in a days work to keep buses on the road.
No shit. I guarantee my job is harder than slinging coffee or sitting in meetings(omg poor baby) but I’m not going to scream BOOTSTRAPS and begrudge someone else trying to improve their working conditions because of it.
Try having to hear Bruno Mars at work, OB.
