It really bugs me how the new stop announcing system on the Metro Transit buses mispronounces “Gottingen.” It’s a hard g, yo. Gott-ing-en. Not Gott-uh-jen. It doesn’t even make sense to pronounce it in the latter way—people just seem to do that because everyone around them does. Spelling and grammar errors by businesses is something that bothers me a lot. I get people doing it (because not everyone cares) and that businesses are made up of people, but there should be some QC/”business editor” to catch these things. —25-Year-Old-Guy-Who-Cannot-Unsee-Many-Things

Speaking of spelling and grammar errors, the title of this bitch has a misspelled word. It’s mispronunciation – not “mispronounciation”.
And besides, if pronounced accurately, with proper diction, most of the people whose destination it was, would become confused, definitely outraged and probably violent.
.. but you are right about the proper German pronunciation. It’s a bit like “goat-ing-en”. Although, we anglicize many foreign words so I’m not sure if we should expect to hear proper German or the anglicized version – whatever that may be.
Should just rename ‘Gottingen’ to the ‘Coolest Street in Halifax’. I love Gollagen (rhymes with collagen) Street, as me dear ol’ Mam used to call it.

How a word is spelled and how a word is pronounced are two very different things. Add cultural influences and the same word, spelled the same way can sound very different when spoken by groups with different dialects, accents and age. I prefer the local pronunciation as it ensures I am understood when speaking about a specific location like Dalhousie versus Dalhoosie and Amhurst versus Amerst
